The most accessible and open-knit of Egly-Ouriet’s cuvées, Les Prémices carries an appetising brown bread, honey and spice complexity behind the fragrant, rounded orchard fruit and juicy black plum. A fine introduction to this part of Champagne. One third each of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay from the village of Trigny in the Petite Montagne.
The sparkling wines of Champagne have been revered by wine drinkers for hundreds of years, and even today they maintain their reputation for excellence of flavor and character, and are consistently associated with quality, decadence, and a cause for celebration. Their unique characteristics are partly due to the careful blending of a small number of selected grape varietals, most commonly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. These grapes, blended in fairly equal quantities, give the wines of Champagne their wonderful flavors and aromas, with the Pinot Noir offering length and backbone, and the Chardonnay varietal giving its acidity and dry, biscuity nature. It isn't unusual to sometimes see Champagne labeled as 'blanc de blanc', meaning it is made using only Chardonnay varietal grapes, or 'blanc de noir', which is made solely with Pinot Noir.

The beautiful rolling hillsides of the Champagne region of France have, for hundreds of years, been producing many of the world's most famous wines. The sparkling white wines to come out of Champagne's prestigious wineries have conquered the world, and are drank in celebration across the globe. The vast majority of the region is under vine, and grows predominantly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grape varietals, which are usually blended together by master wine-makers in order to make their recognizable and widely loved produce. The north-easterly region of Champagne has a relatively cool climate, and quite a lot of rainfall, making it far from ideal for ripening grapes. However, the presence of heavily forested areas in the region helps maintain a balanced temperature, and the generations of expertise the wineries hold clearly produces excellent results in spite of the climatic problems.

The NV (2021) Extra Brut Les Prémices bristles with tension and energy. Dried orchard fruit, crushed flowers, mint and chalk race through to the intense, salivating finish. There’s plenty of vibrancy, but in this tasting, the Prémices feels just a bit dry. Dosage is 2 grams per liter. Disgorged: July 2025.

Based on the 2022 vintage and disgorged in May 2026 with a dosage of two grams per liter, Egly's NV Les Prémices emerges from the glass with aromas of orange oil, pear and peach mingled with fresh bread. Medium-bodied, rich and fleshy, with ripe yet racy acidity, it offers a textural profile animated by a pillowy mousse. Vinified entirely in stainless steel, it incorporates 50% reserve wines from 2021 and 2020 and derives from the village of Trigny in the Massif de Saint-Thierry.
Winery Notes
This glorious Champagne is full of crystalline purity, with its flavors of lemon confit, white flowers, and red cherry. The exquisite bubbles are perfectly measured, leading to a long and textured finish. An absolute gem.
Perfumed with intense grapefruit and bitter-orange aromas. Subtle and elegant with chalky minerality and struck-match depth. Medium-bodied, delicate yet super-energetic,…
