The Rhone Valley of southern France is a particularly fascinating wine region, with a history that stretches back to at least six hundred BCE, when the ancient Greeks first began cultivating vines there. The region itself is split into two distinct sub-regions, with the northern sub-region being famed for its production of exceptional Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines, packed full of interesting character and expressing the terroir found there. The southern sub-region is home to an enormous variety of grapes, and produces red, white and rosé wines, and some of the world's most famous and adored blended wines. The continental climate of the region is ideal for growing grapes, and the winds which blow from the Central Massif help temper the heat in the vineyards, leading to very ripe fruits holding plenty of flavor.

The new wood has been pared back in the 2022 Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc Clos de Beauvenir, a 70-30 blend of Roussanne and Grenache Blanc aged predominantly in demi-muids, with 15% going into new barriques. Hints of oaky spice accent pineapple and lime notes on the nose, while the medium to full-bodied palate is rich and silky in texture, even a trifle phenolic on the finish in its youth. This should be even better in another year or two.

Winery Notes

Brilliant pale gold color with green highlights. On the nose the wine opens with delicate but complex aromas of white flowers (acacia) and fresh pear. On the palate the finesse (white fruits) and the flesh (almond) offer a nice balance. The finish is long, impressive, salivating, the fine and controlled woody, thanks to the choice of demi-muid, adds to the persistence and elegance of the wine. Waiting for this Clos de Beauvenir a few years is the promise of a beautiful moment of sharing!
