Rhone Valley

The Rhone Valley of southern France is a particularly fascinating wine region, with a history that stretches back to at least six hundred BCE, when the ancient Greeks first began cultivating vines there. The region itself is split into two distinct sub-regions, with the northern sub-region being famed for its production of exceptional Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines, packed full of interesting character and expressing the terroir found there. The southern sub-region is home to an enormous variety of grapes, and produces red, white and rosé wines, and some of the world's most famous and adored blended wines. The continental climate of the region is ideal for growing grapes, and the winds which blow from the Central Massif help temper the heat in the vineyards, leading to very ripe fruits holding plenty of flavor.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape, an illustrious wine appellation in the Southern Rhône Valley, France, stands as a vinous icon recognized for its robust red blends. What makes Châteauneuf-du-Pape unique is its historic heritage, boasting ancient vineyards and a rich winemaking tradition dating back to the papal residence in Avignon. The region allows an assemblage of up to 13 grape varieties, prominently featuring Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre. The distinctive galets, large round stones that retain heat, dotting the vineyards contribute to the wines' complexity and distinctive character. Châteauneuf-du-Pape reds are known for their full-bodied nature, rich dark fruit flavors, and a medley of spices, all underscored by a unique herbaceous quality known as garrigue. A distinctive, sanguine style, with serious, salty concentration and notes of soy and brown bread behind the core of plum and crushed cherry. Silky in feel, with bolts of graphite bringing definition and weight. Shows the tang of smoked meat at the end, where alder smoke plays out. Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault. Drink now through 2035. 7,950 cases made, 1,500 cases imported.

A blend of 40% Grenache Noir, 35% Syrah, 20% Mourvèdre and 5% Cinsault, the 2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape from Château la Nerthe reveals a somber, smoky bouquet of dark berries, dark cherries, licorice and violet. Medium-bodied, round and supple, it's frame by structured tannins and a dense, juicy mid-palate, concluding with a delicate, ethereal finish. Matured for 18 months in a combination of foudres, used barrels, new barrels and stainless steel, it's a classic.

Winery Notes

Pretty dark garnet color with purple reflections. The nose is rich, complex on black fruits (blackcurrant, cherries and olives) with peppery and oral touches due to the high proportion of Syrah. The palate is full, dense, with herbaceous accents of southern plants (laurel, thyme even licorice-Zan-). Ripe tannins provide density in the middle of the mouth (plum). The whole despite the heat of the vintage remains on an impression of freshness (menthol): it is deep with a nice length in the finish. A magnificent wine capable of aging two decades or more!
