#55 in Top 100 World Wines, 2025. What a fabulous young wine from this tiny vineyard of four hectares. Aromas of black cherries, graphite, flint and brambleberries. Hints of fresh herbs such as bay leaves. The palate is medium-bodied, showing a fantastic depth of fruit and racy tannins. The purity and complexity are exceptional. A very minerally, vineyard-driven wine with an abundance of character and subtle power. 84% merlot, 10% cabernet sauvignon, and 6% cabernet franc. Best after 2029 but hard to resist.

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

The grand vin from Axelle and Pierre Courdurié, certified organic, this opens with a dark, focused and gently scented character on the nose, with dried cranberry, cherry and blackcurrant notes, with violets and roses on the side. There is a sense of peppery spice to it as well, which also comes across on the palate, which feels relaxed, juicy and plump, with scented summer fruits layered with toast, peppercorn, liquorice and dark chocolate. There is good structure here too, the tannins firm and tight, and hiding well beneath the perfumed fruit. A strong effort from this estate. The alcohol on the label is 14.5%.
