Complex aromas of blackberries, pencil shavings, tar and black olives. Full-bodied with wonderful precision and verve. The flavors are similar to the aromas and give such beauty, presence and energy. Just a touch of salt at the end. Merlot and cabernet franc. It shows gentle strength. From biodynamically grown grapes. Best after 2028, but already wonderful to drink.

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

94-96 Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2023 Croix de Labrie prances out of the glass with gregarious notes of Morello cherries, black raspberries, and rose oil followed by hints of dark chocolate, anise, and cardamom. The medium to full-bodied palate is bright and fragrant, with beautiful tension and wonderfully fine-grained tannins, finishing long and minerally. This is impressive. The blend is 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Cabernet Franc, with pH 3.41.

The 2023 Croix de Labrie has really come along since I tasted it en primeur. Today it is so showy. Vibrant and explosive on the palate, the 2023 offers up a heady mix of intense fruit, along with floral, spice and mineral overtones that add complexity. I especially admire its pure energy and drive. Tasted two times.

A brilliant Saint-Emilion from limestone plateau soils, the 2023 Château Croix De Labrie sports a deep purple hue as well as a gorgeous nose of cassis, crushed stone, spring flowers, and graphite. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it has a pure, seamless, elegant mouthfeel, fine tannins, and a great finish. Based on 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Cabernet Franc and aged 22 months in roughly 56% new French oak with the balance in once-used barrels, foudre, and 500-liter vessels, this beauty will benefit from a few years of bottle age and keep for two decades or more if well stored. This is a fabulous estate that every reader should have on their radar. Drink 2029-2046.
