This is a rich wine, but there is a freshness and brightness with creamy tannins, crushed stones and Spanish cedar. Blueberries. Medium- to full-bodied, it’s exuberant and lively. 70% merlot, 25% cabernet franc and 5% cabernet sauvignon. Hard not to drink now but better in two or three years.

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

The 2022 Faugères is vibrant and layered in the glass. Dark cherry, graphite, menthol, new leather, licorice and a kiss of French oak all build with a bit of time. Pretty floral and spice notes lend notable freshness and verve throughout.

A wine from the Silvio Denz portfolio of vineyards, this feels dark, focused and lightly mineral on the nose, with tightly packed floral elements reminiscent of violets and rosehips, along with liquorice, toast, dark chocolate and sweet pastry. The palate continues in the same confident vein, with a core of dark and concentrated fruits, set in a powdery substance, focused rather than overly muscular, and countered by a rich core of sweet and dark tannins, as well as a peppery acidity. This all works together very well, with piles of grip and a long finish of ripe, grippy tannins, with no heat. A success at Faugères this year, but it will need cellar time to soak up those tannins.

The 2022 Château Faugères offers both red and black fruit as well as notes of tobacco, spice, and flowers. Beautifully balanced, it has sweet tannins, no hard edges, and a round, lush mouthfeel. It’s a beautiful wine with depth and elegance, as well as 15+ years of overall longevity.
