A brilliant, impeccably made Saint-Emilion, the 2023 Château Berliquet is based on 59% Merlot and 41% Cabernet Franc and aged 16-18 months in 40% new barrels with 15% in amphorae, the balance in neutral oak. I love the sense of class here, with black cherries, leafy tobacco, chocolate, and damp earth on the nose. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it’s round, lush, and opulent, with nicely integrated spicy oak and outstanding overall balance. Notably, this is the first vintage produced in the estate’s new winery, where additional tanks allowed for greater precision in the cellar, and I think it shows. Incredibly classic and impressive stuff, drink bottles over the coming 25+ years. Drink 2026-2051.

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

Confirming expectations from the en primeur tastings, the 2023 Berliquet is superb, revealing a complex, perfumed bouquet of lead pencil, black raspberries, violets and spices, accented by fresh licorice. Medium- to full-bodied, layered and textured, it is deep and seamless, built around a fleshy core of fruit and concluding with mineral, chalky tannins. A few years in the cellar will allow it to gain further harmony.

Fresh, crunchy red cherries, red berries, chalk and hibiscus on the nose. Medium-bodied on the palate, with fresh, bright acidity, fine tannins and a very succulent finish. Lovely brightness and acidity here gives lots of energy and drinkability. More about freshness and finesse here. 59% merlot and 41% cabernet franc. Lovely now, but can hold.

Some damson and plum fruit on the nose, dark scents with blueberry. High toned and zingy, the fruit is forward and alive on the palate, sharp and high toned, really fun and lifted. A nice, open and alive expression centred around the perky summer berry fruit with edges of wet stones, graphite and pencil lead. A bit of waxy crayon in there too. It’s certainly finessed, maybe not as openly charming as Berliquet can be, this has more of a youthful, high acidity style. Tart but well controlled, a really lively glass of wine, so much energy and really does make you want another sip. 3.53pH. First vintage produced in the new winery with more vats for plot-by-plot vinification. Ageing 16-18 months ageing, 34% new barrels and 10 amphoras. A yield of 45hl/ha.

The 2023 Berliquet is classy, elegant and polished, just as it was en primeur. Crushed flowers, red cherry fruit, leather, incense, cedar and sweet pipe tobacco are beautifully delineated. The biggest changes at Berliquet since Chanel acquired it in 2017 are the tannin profile and purity of fruit, both of which are exalted in the 2023, the first vintage made in the new cellar. It's a terrific effort from the team led by Technical Director Nicolas Audebert. Tasted three times.
