There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

The Merlot-dominated 2018 Château Grand Corbin (there's 20% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon) offers a pretty, perfumed, incredibly floral bouquet with raspberry and blueberry fruit characteristics as well as scorched earth, chalky minerality, and cedary herb. Medium-bodied, elegant, and silky on the palate, it's not a blockbuster, but it has a delicate, seamless, and again, incredibly floral style that's a joy to drink. It will benefit from just short-term bottle age and keep for 10-15 years or so. It should be a terrific value.

The 2018 Grand Corbin has a lush, candied bouquet of black cherries and crème de cassis, all very seductive, but the vanilla-y oak seems nicely enmeshed. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins that lend a little more structure than I expected when I tasted from barrel. Salted licorice mingles with truffle toward the finish, which feels reassuringly long. Enjoy this over the next 12–15 years.

A little tight and austere right now. Certainly you get the Cabernet Sauvignon influence even with such a small amount - there are powerful tannins holding things together alongside dark fruits and coffee bean character. The tannins are starting to soften and elongate after the ageing, and there is plenty of potential for this to improve further. Hubert de Boüard is the consultant; 40% new oak.

A muscular style, with a slightly extracted feel to the mix of plum, blackberry and black currant compote flavors, wrapped in a thick coating of singed cedar and apple wood.
