Brilliant – double decant and wait an hour so the wine can better express its sensual aromas of faded rose, cassis, homemade strawberry jam, graphite and iodine freshness. The palate is enveloped in cashmere-like refinement, leading to a long finish with sea air and floral freshness. Best to hang on another five years for a proper drinking window, but if you insist, try it now with filet mignon. Drinking Window 2021 – 2055.

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

The Wine Independent

2010 Pichon Lalande is a blend of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot and has a deep garnet color. It storms out of the glass with powerful notes of baked black plums, mocha, tar, and licorice, followed by a core of blackcurrant jelly, laced with bay leaves. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is taut, muscular and impactful, framed by firm, grainy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing long and earthy. Approachable now, it is still a little tight and I would give it another 5 years or so to really hit its stride, then drink it over the next 20 years+.
