Cabernet Sauvignon

By far and away the most recognized and widely grown red wine grape varietal in the world is the Cabernet Sauvignon. First cultivated in the 18th century in France, this wonderful cross of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc grapes has long since been the most important varietal for red wines across the globe. Now grown everywhere from its native France to the furthest reaches of the New World, Cabernet Sauvignon is adored and prized by wineries for its hardiness and resistance to rot, as well as its large and sharp flavors and wonderful capability for fine aging Indeed, many of the finest wines of history and the modern age would be simply unimaginable without Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, with the famed wineries of Bordeaux and other important regions using it as the primary grape in their oak aged produce. High tannin levels, acidity and powerful flavors are the characteristics most commonly associated with this varietal, however, when blended and slowly aged, it is capable of a world of flavors and aromas unmatched by any other grape.

Of all the New World wine countries, perhaps the one which has demonstrated the most flair for producing high quality wines - using a combination of traditional and forward-thinking contemporary methods - has been the United States of America. California as a wine producing region has grown in size and importance considerably over the past couple of centuries, and today is the proud producer of more than ninety percent of the United States' wines. A strong effort, Realm's 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Moonracer is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, coming from a mix of older vines and newer plantings. Mixed red and black cherries appear on the nose, accented by hints of cedar and spice, while the medium- to full-bodied palate brings a suave, suede-like feel—that famous Stags Leap District texture. Ending long and harmonious, this is just a wonderful effort.

This is very expressive with pine needles, pine cones, blackcurrants, forest floor, and ink pot. Full-bodied and chewy with firm and structured tannins. Mineral with an almost chalky character that comes through clearly. Dry tension at the end that keeps your palate refreshed. Drink after 2027.

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Moonracer is aromatic and silky, with a gorgeous bouquet that makes a strong opening statement. Crushed flowers, mint, cedar, sweet pipe tobacco, red cherry/plum fruit and rose petals are some of the notes that grace this elegant, wonderfully polished Cabernet.

The 2021 Moonracer is a single vineyard wine from Realm’s vineyard in Stags Leap District. “The wine is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon this year because the vineyard is being replanted,” said winemaker Benoit Touquette. “The Merlot and Cabernet Franc were pulled, and the new plantings aren't in production yet. By the time we're done, we will have replanted all this vineyard. Then a true footprint of the place will be in this wine.” Deep garnet-purple colored, gregarious notes of blackberry pie, black cherries, and black currant pastilles prance out of the glass, leading to fragrant wafts of lavender, chocolate mint, and cinnamon stick. Full-bodied, the palate is taut with ripe, crunchy black fruits, supported by a solid frame of grainy tannins and compelling tension, finishing long with loads of mineral and baking spice sparks. 720 cases were made.

All Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Moonracer is one of the more structured, firmer wines in the lineup, but I suspect it's going to gain plenty of elegance with 4-6 years of bottle age. Blueberries, black cherries, leather, dried herbs, and lead pencil notes all emerge from this full-bodied, rich, concentrated 2021, which has building tannins and a great finish.
