#62 in Top 100 World, 2024. The purity of fruit on the nose is really something, with violets, lavender, sandalwood, light white pepper and white roses. Medium-bodied with totally integrated tannins that give a silky texture and a long finish. A pure syrah with lots of class for the vintage. Drink or hold.

Syrah

Known as Syrah in most countries around the world, and Shiraz in Australia and certain other regions of the New World, this grape varietal has proven over the centuries to be one of the most powerful and flavorful red wine grapes there is. It is now one of the planet's most widely grown grapes, and is a favorite with wineries as a result of its robustness and versatility. It isn't easy to identify many characteristics of this particular varietal, due to the fact that it is highly versatile and shows significant differences in flavor and character depending on the terroir it is grown in, and the climatic conditions of the region. However, Syrah is most widely associated with full bodied, strong and loud red wines, packed full of fruity and spicy flavors, held in a beautifully deep red liquid.

There are few countries in the world with a viticultural history as long or as illustrious as that claimed by Italy. Grapes were first being grown and cultivated on Italian soil several thousand years ago by the Greeks and the Pheonicians, who named Italy 'Oenotria' – the land of wines – so impressed were they with the climate and the suitability of the soil for wine production. Of course, it was the rise of the Roman Empire which had the most lasting influence on wine production in Italy, and their influence can still be felt today, as much of the riches of the empire came about through their enthusiasm for producing wines and exporting it to neighbouring countries. Since those times, a vast amount of Italian land has remained primarily for vine cultivation, and thousands of wineries can be found throughout the entire length and breadth of this beautiful country, drenched in Mediterranean sunshine and benefiting from the excellent fertile soils found there. Italy remains very much a 'land of wines', and one could not imagine this country, its landscape and culture, without it.

The central Italian region of Tuscany is widely understood to be one of the world's most famous and highly regarded wine regions. The beautiful rolling hillsides and medieval towns and castles which are a key feature of the area are also home to many of Europe's finest wineries, and extremely high quality vineyards growing the distinctive Sangiovese and Vernaccia grape varietals which are the flavorful backbone of Tuscany's wonderful red and white wines. For almost three thousand years, this region has been recognized as an ideal home for wine production on a large scale, and the ancient Etruscans, Greeks and Romans all noticed that fine grape varietals flourished on the unique soils and under the hot sunshine which typifies the area. Today, Tuscany is home to a wide range of wines, from the traditional to the complex, but all dedicated to excellent flavors and aromas, and maintaining the region's international reputation.

The Tua Rita 2022 Syrah Per Sempre draws its precious fruit from a half-hectare parcel planted in 1998 and another parcel planted in 2004. The advanced age of the vines adds to the complexity and depth of the wine with dark plum, sweet spice, toast and campfire ash. Per Sempre ages in oak for 18 months with 80% new woof and 20% second-use barrique. Syrah does a great job of balancing its fruit against the integrated oak. The wine makes a big impact on the senses thanks to its open-knit texture and generous concentration. On the palate, it is firm but also fresh, and both these qualities bode well for its aging potential.

Though well-marked by vanilla and toasty new oak, this suave red offers plenty of fruit. Blackberry, blueberry, violet, licorice, mineral and spice flavors abound, and this builds to a terrific finish of fruit, oak spice and savory accents. Syrah. The 2022 Syrah Per Sempre was raised for 18 months in 80% new French oak barrels. It reveals more depth and is forward in the glass on opening, with aromas of blackberries, vanilla, oak spice, lavender, and a light savory touch of pancetta. It pours a more saturated purple/red color and is full-bodied, with broader shoulders on the palate. Its tannins are ripe, and its oak spice lasts through its long finish. This is going to take time to harmonize with its more generous use of oak. For my taste, I prefer the Keir, but this will appeal to those who aren't shy about oak. Drink 2027-2040.

Winery Notes

Deep garnet in color, notes of ripe blackberries and plums complement undertones of figs, black pepper, and violets. On the palate, it is full-bodied with silky tannins and flavors that unfold into the lush finish.
