Varietal

Merlot

With its dark blue colored fruits and high juice content, Merlot varietal grapes have long been a favorite of wine producers around the globe, with it being found in vineyards across Europe, the Americas and elsewhere in the New World. One of the distinguishing features of Merlot grapes is the fact that they have a relatively low tannin content and an exceptionally soft and fleshy character, meaning they are capable of producing incredibly rounded and mellow wines. This mellowness is balanced with plenty of flavor, however, and has made Merlot grapes the varietal of choice for softening other, more astringent and tannin-heavy wines, often resulting in truly exceptional produce. Merlot is regarded as one of the key 'Bordeaux' varietals for precisely this reason; when combined with the drier Cabernet Sauvignon, it is capable of blending beautifully to produce some of the finest wines available in the world.

Owner Stefano Frascolla describes 2019 as 'a dream vintage' and describes how the vines 'underwent all the stages of their phenolic development at the optimum times.' For me, the 2019 Redigaffi is a wine of sublime harmony and balance and it reminds me very much of the 2016. It is absolutely brimming with ripe black cherry, cream and blackcurrant flavours encased in compact, super-fine tannins that are firm yet so elegant and refined. Energetic and vivacious in character, it is still not completely formed but has all the ingredients for a great future.

The Wine Independent

I tasted the 2019 Tua Rita Redigaffi at a special 25th anniversary vertical tasting at the Tua Rita winery in Suvereto, Tuscany, in July 2022. I tasted all 25 vintages where the real standouts were the 1997, the 2000, and the 2016. I feel the very young 2019 is also at the level of the 2016 and worthy of a perfect score. On the palate it is just brimming with ripe red fruits, pretty floral notes, cream, black cherry, and blackcurrant flavors with superfine, elegant tannins. This 2019 is a wine with great tenacity and energy. It is still not completely formed yet but all the wonderful ingredients are there for this to be a great wine with a long life. Drink now to 2040.

I am a big fan of the 2019 vintage and, in most cases, prefer it to the 2018 vintage that is often harder to read (with alternating spells of cool and heat). But in the case of this wine, I like both vintages about the same for different reasons. The 2019 Redigaffi feels elegant and less hearty compared to its previous edition. This important Merlot-based wine delivers an immediate quality of fruit, with pretty freshness that renders a very lively and vivid mouthfeel. This is a sharp and well-defined interpretation of the grape with black cherry, granite and cooling menthol-like endnotes.

Deep, intense purple in color, with tremendous extraction, Redigaffi is a monumental and beautifully structured wine that shows how well the non-native Merlot has adapted to the area around Suvereto on the Tuscan coast.
