The 2024 Lions de Suduiraut Blanc Sec is a terrific apéritif white. Lemon peel, sage, mint, chalk and white pepper are some of the notes that grace this airy white. Brisk saline notes extend the clean, bracing finish. As is so often the case, the Lions is a delight.

White Bordeaux

France is widely known as being the home of many of the world's finest white wines, and within France, the name which rings out across the wine world and is always associated with excellence of quality and flavor is Bordeaux. The white wines of the magnificent Bordeaux region are typically blended, and rely on the winemaker's skill and expertise to achieve the fine balance between the primary grape varietals used. Most blended white Bordeaux wines are made up of Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and Muscadelle varietals, although there are actually nine grapes officially allowed by French wine law for the inclusion in Bordeaux white wines. The other six are Sauvignon Gris, Merlot Blanc, Ugni Blanc, Colombard, Ondenc and Mauzac, although the use of these other grapes has been in steady decline over the past century.

89-90 Notes of boxwood, confit citrus, kumquat and flowers preface the 2024 Lions Sec de Suduiraut, a moderately weighted, tense and lively wine built around tangy acids and an ethereal finish. This blend of 56% Sémillon, 29% Sauvignon Blanc and 15% Sauvignon Gris will mature in a combination of stainless steel (70%) and barrels (30%).

Based on 56% Sémillon, 29% Sauvignon Blanc, and 15% Sauvignon Gris and brought up 70% in vats and 30% in barrels for six months, the 2024 Lions De Suduiraut Blanc Sec has bright lemon and lime, honeyed mint, and a kiss of minerality. It's refreshing, clean, and balanced, with a crisp, lively mouthfeel and a good finish. Drink this impeccably made white over the coming 2-3 years. Drink 2026-2028.

Winery Notes

Light yellow in colour with green glints, displays a subtle nose full of promise. Citrus aromas mingle with notes of white flowers and white fruits, producing a fresh, fruit-driven nose. The attack is gentle, persisting on the smooth, fresh palate with flavours of pear, sweet lemon and pomelo. The finish is direct, mineral and fruit-driven, with wonderful length. The character of the cuvée shines through with generosity, density and fruit, with the hint of freshness characteristic of the 2024 vintage.
