Rhone Valley

The Rhone Valley of southern France is a particularly fascinating wine region, with a history that stretches back to at least six hundred BCE, when the ancient Greeks first began cultivating vines there. The region itself is split into two distinct sub-regions, with the northern sub-region being famed for its production of exceptional Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines, packed full of interesting character and expressing the terroir found there. The southern sub-region is home to an enormous variety of grapes, and produces red, white and rosé wines, and some of the world's most famous and adored blended wines. The continental climate of the region is ideal for growing grapes, and the winds which blow from the Central Massif help temper the heat in the vineyards, leading to very ripe fruits holding plenty of flavor.

Chateauneuf Du Pape

Châteauneuf-du-Pape, an illustrious wine appellation in the Southern Rhône Valley, France, stands as a vinous icon recognized for its robust red blends. What makes Châteauneuf-du-Pape unique is its historic heritage, boasting ancient vineyards and a rich winemaking tradition dating back to the papal residence in Avignon. The region allows an assemblage of up to 13 grape varieties, prominently featuring Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre. The distinctive galets, large round stones that retain heat, dotting the vineyards contribute to the wines' complexity and distinctive character. The final blends had been made at Nalys, although the wine was scheduled to be bottled after my visit. The 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape Saintes Pierres is fruity and ripe, with scents of mint, black cherries and purple raspberries. Full-bodied and velvety textured, it finishes with ample length and a touch of licorice. Tasted twice (once blind), with consistent notes.

Juicy, fresh and inviting in feel, with kirsch and raspberry coulis dotted with garrigue and red tea details that provide nice energy through the minerally finish. Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault, Muscardin, Mourvèdre, Vaccarèse and Terret Blanc. Best from 2023 through 2037.

Brilliant violet. Intensely perfumed black raspberry and cherry aromas are complemented by suggestions of candied flowers and baking spices. Stains the palate with juicy, spice-laced red and blue fruit preserve flavors that are lifted and sharpened by a smoky mineral element. At once lively and concentrated, finishing very long and spicy, with supple tannins and lingering florality.

The second wine of Château de Nalys. Authentic, unforced and easy-going, this has lots to enjoy. It's approachable but concentrated, well balanced, structured but fruity - harmonious and complete. Not terribly deep or long, but it's nonetheless a satisfying wine. 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 4% Mourvèdre, 2% Cinsault, 2% Counoise, 1% Terret Noir, 1% Muscardin.

Looking at the reds, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Saintes Pierres De Nalys is still in barrel and has a medium-bodied, open-knit, sexy style as well as ample, garrigue-laced red and black fruits. It will certainly be an outstanding wine.
