Aglianico

Aglianico is a black skinned grape most commonly associated with the exquisite wines of the Campania region of Italy. It thrives most happily in hot and dry climates, and as such, has had plenty of success in the New World, particularly in the United States, where it is used to great effect in many red wines. It was believed to come from Greece several thousand years ago, brought by Pheonician tradesman, and was wildly popular in Roman times, when it was used in the finest wines made by the Roman empire. Aglianico grapes produce full bodied red wines which have a high tannin and acid content. As such, it has excellent ageing potential, and with a standard amount of time in a barrel, it rounds out and mellows to produce beautifully balanced wines.

There are few countries in the world with a viticultural history as long or as illustrious as that claimed by Italy. Grapes were first being grown and cultivated on Italian soil several thousand years ago by the Greeks and the Pheonicians, who named Italy 'Oenotria' – the land of wines – so impressed were they with the climate and the suitability of the soil for wine production. Of course, it was the rise of the Roman Empire which had the most lasting influence on wine production in Italy, and their influence can still be felt today, as much of the riches of the empire came about through their enthusiasm for producing wines and exporting it to neighbouring countries. Since those times, a vast amount of Italian land has remained primarily for vine cultivation, and thousands of wineries can be found throughout the entire length and breadth of this beautiful country, drenched in Mediterranean sunshine and benefiting from the excellent fertile soils found there. Italy remains very much a 'land of wines', and one could not imagine this country, its landscape and culture, without it.

Campania

The beautiful region of Campania, located in the 'shin' of Italy's boot, has been an important center for viticulture and wine making for thousands of years. Indeed, archaeologists believe that wine making was happening in Campania as long ago as 1,200 BCE, making this one of the oldest wine regions on earth. By the time the Roman Empire starting expanding, Campania became the world's most important wine producing region, and the hundred or so native grape varietals which flourish in the mineral rich soils near the coast became the key ingredient in many of Rome's legendary classical wines. Today, the wine industry in Campania is booming once more, following a drop in the region's reputation in the 1970s, and is gaining awards, recognition and new fans each year.

Aromas of ripe strawberries, oranges and volcanic soil. Some stones, too. Full-bodied with lots of creamy tannins and richness, but not overpowering. This is from one of the highest vineyards in Taurasi at 790 meters altitude. Needs three to four years to come together. Excellent potential.

This is a delicious wine that reveals a luscious and rich consistency. The Tenute Capaldo 2018 Taurasi Riserva Gulielmus stands apart in a crowd thanks to the generous and seamless nature of its texture. There are no harsh edges here, and the wine is redolent of black fruit, plum and sweet spice. The tannins are integrated and velvety in this wine, which sees anywhere from 18 to 24 months in barrique. This is a 6,000-bottle release.

#92 in Top 100, 2025. A fresh, savory red, with milled pepper and cured tobacco notes on the nose and palate lacing flavors of baked cherry, pomegranate puree, iron, espresso and licorice root. Shows good length and integration, with a powerful frame of refined tannins providing limber muscle and firming the finish. Best from 2028 through 2040. 808 cases made, 300 cases imported.

Winery Notes

Gulielmus comes from a 2-hectare vineyard in Taurasi, in the Sala district, where the soil is clayey and the unilateral guyot vines have been planted, starting from 1992, with buds harvested from the old prefillossera vineyards. The harvest is done by hand, between mid-October and early November. After fermentation in steel, the wine ages for 18/24 months in barriques and again in the bottle for over two years.
