The 2024 Malbec is sourced from Mendoza. This is the ABC of provincial Malbec: expressive red fruit, a touch of fresh plum, a faint balsamic note and violets. It is juicy and agile with integrated freshness. Compared with the previous vintage, the 2024 release is slightly slimmer and more lithe.

The purple Malbec variety grapes which now grow all over the Old and New Worlds had their origins in France, where they are one of the few grape varieties allowed to be used in the highly esteemed blended wines of Bordeaux. However, it is perhaps the New World Malbec wines which have attracted the most attention in recent years, as they thrive in hot southern climates in ways they cannot in their native country, where the damp conditions leave them highly vulnerable to rot. Malbec grapes are renowned for their high tannin content, resulting in full-bodied red wines packed with ripe, plummy flavors and held in their characteristically dark, garnet colored liquid. In many countries, Malbec is still used primarily as a varietal for blending, as it adds a great level of richness and density to other, lighter and thinner varietals. Produced from Catena's holdings in Lunlunta, El Cepillo and Gualtallary, the 2024 Malbec is a classic expression of the variety that matured for 12 months in second- and third-use barrels. Roasted herbs, graphite and subtle floral notes mark the nose, followed by a soft, seductive mouthfeel and an even-keeled finish that lingers with savory flavors and a discreet mineral core.

Winery Notes

The Catena Malbec presents a deep violet color with purple reflections. This microclimate blend of four unique vineyards offers intense aroma, soft texture and concentrated flavor. Deep aromas of ripe red and dark fruits are joined by delicate violet and lavender notes, with traces of vanilla and mocha. A rich, concentrated mouthfeel is highlighted by flavors of blueberries and blackberries with a touch of leather and cinnamon. The wine has well-integrated tannins, bright acidity and a flinty minerality that provides exceptional length to the finish.
