From old vines, the 2024 Malbec Appellation Lunlunta is airy ni tannins, with a generosity of fresh red fruit. Supple, balanced, and made in a lighter style than some of the other Malbecs in the producer’s fold, there’s a pretty floral quality at its core that compels one to taste more. This will age moderately well but is built for pure enjoyment.

Varietal

Malbec

The purple Malbec variety grapes which now grow all over the Old and New Worlds had their origins in France, where they are one of the few grape varieties allowed to be used in the highly esteemed blended wines of Bordeaux. However, it is perhaps the New World Malbec wines which have attracted the most attention in recent years, as they thrive in hot southern climates in ways they cannot in their native country, where the damp conditions leave them highly vulnerable to rot. Malbec grapes are renowned for their high tannin content, resulting in full-bodied red wines packed with ripe, plummy flavors and held in their characteristically dark, garnet colored liquid. In many countries, Malbec is still used primarily as a varietal for blending, as it adds a great level of richness and density to other, lighter and thinner varietals. However, single variety Malbec wines have been greatly on the rise in recent years, with some fantastic results and big, juicy flavors marking them out as a great wine for matching with a wide range of foods.

The 2024 Malbec Appellation Lunlunta comes from Luján de Cuyo and was aged 11–13 months in French oak barrels (25–40% new, plus second- and third-use wood). Highly expressive, it opens with clear violet notes and fresh plum, framed by refined oak. It is dry, juicy and supple, with fine, flexible tannins and an enveloping flow. A classic Luján de Cuyo Malbec.

A ripe and fruity nose of baked cherries, boysenberries, hibiscus and hints of minerals and white pepper. Medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins and a juicy, textured finish of good length. Lovely now. Why hold?

Wine Spectator

This is elegantly detailed, with fresh thyme and lavender hints joining a generous, orange peel–accented core of cherry and strawberry that’s fresh in feel but builds structure on the back end. Finishes with a slight grip of minerally tannins. Drink now through 2036. 12,000 cases made, 2,700 cases imported.

Winery Notes

The Catena Lunlunta perfectly pairs with smoked meats and cheeses and equally well with braises, roasts or grilled meats and fowl. Perfect for a light dinner or a substantial meal, it is an extremely versatile wine that can be enjoyed with or without food.
