The 2022 Vertente is showing a little earthier, with darker notes of graphite and black fruit, a touch of licorice and the warmth from the vintage. It’s more Mediterranean, with notes of aromatic herbs and slightly powdery tannins that accentuate the rustic side of it. This fermented in stainless steel with around 40% full clusters and matured in well-seasoned, neutral barrels (they renewed a lot of barrels in 2023) for around 22 months. This is also a Douro blend from different zones in the valley. 80,000 bottles produced.

Douro

The undisputed jewel in Portugal's crown is the beautiful wine region of Douro, located along the banks of the river from where it gets its name. The region itself is renowned around the world for its range of wonderfully aromatic fortified wines, as well as a wide variety of still red and white wines made from native grape varietals. Wineries in the Douro region utilize a huge amount of different local grapes for their characterful wines, but generally the most popular are made from Tinta Roriz, a rich and flavorful red wine grape related to Spain's flagship Tempranillo. However, there are plenty of different red and white grape varietals used in the region, all benefiting from the excellent hot weather and mineral rich terroir which characterizes the Douro valleys.

Winery Notes

The grapes for Vertente come from the slopes of Pinhao and Tedo rivers - both Douro tributaries. The grape blend includes several varieties, where Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz are predominant. Vertente is a fresh and elegant wine. Its freshness and youth come from the vines of Quinta de Napoles and its elegance from the old vineyards of the Pinhao valley.
