Varietal

Red Bordeaux

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act – the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

Appellation

Pomerol

Pomerol, a distinguished appellation on Bordeaux's Right Bank, stands as a vinous jewel celebrated for its exceptional Merlot-dominant red wines. What makes Pomerol unique is its relatively small size, allowing for an intimate focus on individual vineyards and an emphasis on artisanal winemaking. Unlike many Bordeaux regions, Pomerol does not have a formal classification system, placing the spotlight on each estate's intrinsic quality and distinct terroir. Merlot thrives in Pomerol's clay-rich soils, crafting wines of opulence, velvety texture, and alluring plum and black cherry notes. Iconic châteaux like Pétrus and Le Pin showcase the pinnacle of Pomerol's winemaking prowess. The absence of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blends further accentuates the appellation's uniqueness. Pomerol wines are revered for their approachability in youth and the ability to evolve gracefully over time, exemplifying the timeless elegance and allure of this exceptional Bordeaux appellation.

The 2023 La Fleur-Pétrus is impeccable. Delicate yet pliant, La Fleur-Pétrus captures the duality of the vintage. Soft contours envelop dark red plum, cedar, pipe tobacco, dried herbs and incense. The 2023 opens beautifully with a bit of time in the glass. I suspect it will do very much the same over the next few years in bottle. This is such a classy, polished Pomerol.

94-96 Barrel Sample. A mashed black-fruit aroma, powered tannins and contrasting rich plum fruits suggest a wine with concentration and density. It is impressive, a wine that is definitely ageworthy.

Jeb Dunnuck

Sporting a vivid purple hue, the 2023 Château La Fleur-Petrus reveals terrific aromatics of ripe red and black fruits, black cherries, graphite, dried herbs, and loamy soil, as well as loads of baking spices. Based on 97% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot and aged 16-18 months in 50% new French oak, it's rich, medium to full-bodied, has a concentrated, layered mouthfeel, plenty of ripe tannins, and outstanding length. As it sits in the glass, it picks up more of that classic La Fleur-Petrus complexity and nuance. Hide this for 5-7 years and it will keep for 20-25 years with ease. Drink 2031-2053.

Wine Advocate

Perfumed and refined, the 2023 La Fleur-Pétrus has turned out very well, offering aromas of rose petals, dark berries, plums and incense, with new oak rendered almost imperceptible. Medium- to full-bodied, dense and deep, it is layered, built around a concentrated core of fruit framed by powdery tannins and concluding with a long, penetrating, mineral finish. The blend comprises 97% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc, matured in 50% new oak.

Offers a solid, focused core of ripe cassis and plum fruit, but there’s also lovely lift, with violet and ink notes adding range. Meanwhile, underneath courses a steady cast iron element, along with sweet tobacco and chestnut accents. Refined and lengthy, with depth that sets this apart from the pack. Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Best from 2028 through 2040.

The Wine Independent

93-95+ 2023 La Fleur-Petrus has a fine subtle nose with notes of dough and vanilla. The vanilla scents continue in the taste, which is medium bodied, super smooth and creamy. This is a well made, elegant wine with a big reservoir of fruit and stamina presented in a very elegant way. Even though this wine should be ready in 3-5 years it should also age well indeed.
