Domaine Chanzy

Daniel Chanzy envisioned Côte Chalonnaise wines that would rival the greatness of the Côte d’Or and founded Maison Chanzy in 1974. Initially, he invested heavily in vineyards in the northern part of that region. In 2013, a group of Burgundy wine lovers purchased the estate and have since added holdings in Côte Chalonnaise and one in Côte de Beaune for a total of 163 acres planted.
The winery itself is in the village of Bouzeron, site of 19 hectares of owned vineyards, including the monopole Clos de la Fortune, its flagship wine. In the Côte d’Or, Chanzy owns crus in some of Burgundy’s iconic appellations such as Puligny-Montrachet and Vosne-Romanée. Vineyards are farmed without the use of herbicides and pesticides, relying instead on organic fertilizers and occasional plowing between rows. Chanzy is in the process of obtaining Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE) certification.
All vinification takes place in Bouzeron, where whites go immediately to press and reds are sorted and mostly destemmed before undergoing a six to eight day cold maceration. Fermentation occurs with selected yeast or via pied-de-cuve and elevage also varies for each wine. Wines from the basic appellations ferment in tank while the crus are barrel fermented. Chanzy uses very little new wood and barrels range in size from the traditional 228-liter pièce for Premiers Crus to larger barrels or foudre for Village appellation wines. The wines receive a light fining and filtration before bottling with low amounts of sulfur oxide.
With full control of production from vineyard to bottling, Chanzy’s impressive range spans 40 appellations in 8 villages of Côte Chalonnaise and Côte d’Or making it a leading producer in the region.
