Camus-Bruchon

Camus-Bruchon

Guillaume Camus, the skilled winemaker behind Domaine Camus-Bruchon, stands out as a masterful creator of red wines in the charming Côte de Beaune region, particularly in the village of Savigny-les-Beaune. Crafting wines that epitomize the essence of exceptional Burgundy, the Camus family boasts a collection of beautifully balanced, deep, and intricate wines. With prime vineyards in Savigny-les-Beaune, including superb Premier Crus and select village-level parcels featuring ancient Pinot Noir vines, as well as Premier Cru in Beaune and Pommard, their portfolio is truly impressive.

Guillaume Camus of Domaine Camus-Bruchon

Guillaume Camus dedicates a significant portion of his time to the vineyards, where the Camus-Bruchon estate features a notable abundance of very old vines. These venerable vines contribute to some of the finest examples of Savigny-les-Beaune wines in Burgundy.

Savigny-les-Beaune holds appeal for red Burgundy enthusiasts seeking both value and quality in their wines. While the village can occasionally exude rustic charm, Camus-Bruchon’s red Burgundies showcase spiciness on the nose and palate, characteristic of Savigny-les-Beaune wines. These wines are enjoyable from an early stage, yet they also gracefully evolve with bottle aging, demonstrating the ability to mature elegantly in the cellar for two to three decades.

The Camus lineup commences with a profound Bourgogne rouge, showcasing the spiciness synonymous with Savigny-les-Beaune wines. Additionally, an outstanding Chorey-les-Beaune offers immediate complexity, representing a remarkable value in the realm of red Burgundy. Among the Savigny-les-Beaunes, three village-level bottlings stand out, including the delightful “Cuvee Reine Joly” named after Guillaume’s grandmother, along with two venerable lieux-dits, “Pimentiers” and “Grands Liards,” boasting Premier Cru quality. These vineyards, aged between 80 and 100 years, provide depth, creamy sappiness, and a fine minerality.

The Premier Cru Savignys in the Camus-Bruchon collection feature some of the village’s most exceptional vineyards. Noteworthy examples include the “Aux Gravains” with fifty-year-old vines, a sublime “Les Lavières” known for its elegance, and an old vine bottling of “Narbantons,” recognized for its depth and aging potential. The domaine also presents a Beaune Premier Cru from “Clos du Roi,” a classic representation of the village with lovely red fruit and spice. Completing the red wine lineup is an excellent Pommard Premier Cru from Les Arvelets, showcasing fifty-year-old vines and a harmonious blend of elegance and power.

The Camus-Bruchon wines consistently reflect their terroir with precision, offering mid-palate sappiness, structural integrity, and a distinctive mineral backbone that sets them apart in southern Burgundy. Across generations, the Camus father and son have upheld meticulous winemaking practices, utilizing no more than twenty-five percent new oak for their top wines. Since 2010, Guillaume has incorporated whole cluster fermentation (15-30%, depending on the vintage), enhancing complexity and freshness.

In essence, the Camus-Bruchon wines exude refined elegance and perfumed precision, a remarkable feat considering the youthful “sauvage” elements found in young Savignys and Pommard. Guillaume Camus emerges as an unsung young star in the Côte de Beaune, offering extraordinary value in the world of red Burgundy from the village of Savigny-les-Beaune rather than the more renowned Vosne-Romanée or Gevrey-Chambertin.
