Straight-up classic Cornas from a mix of terroirs and older vines, the 2022 Cornas Vieilles Vignes has rocking cassis, violets, pepper, and exotic floral and incense-like aromatics. These carry to a medium to full-bodied, concentrated Cornas with the ripe, expressive, perfumed style of the vintage as well as the firmer, focused tannins that will benefit from bottle age. Do your best to give bottles 4-5 years and enjoy over the following decade. Drink 2029-2039.

Varietal

Syrah

Known as Syrah in most countries around the world, and Shiraz in Australia and certain other regions of the New World, this grape varietal has proven over the centuries to be one of the most powerful and flavorful red wine grapes there is. It is now one of the planet's most widely grown grapes, and is a favorite with wineries as a result of its robustness and versatility. It isn't easy to identify many characteristics of this particular varietal, due to the fact that it is highly versatile and shows significant differences in flavor and character depending on the terroir it is grown in, and the climatic conditions of the region. However, Syrah is most widely associated with full bodied, strong and loud red wines, packed full of fruity and spicy flavors, held in a beautifully deep red liquid.

Region

Rhone Valley

The Rhone Valley of southern France is a particularly fascinating wine region, with a history that stretches back to at least six hundred BCE, when the ancient Greeks first began cultivating vines there. The region itself is split into two distinct sub-regions, with the northern sub-region being famed for its production of exceptional Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines, packed full of interesting character and expressing the terroir found there. The southern sub-region is home to an enormous variety of grapes, and produces red, white and rosé wines, and some of the world's most famous and adored blended wines. The continental climate of the region is ideal for growing grapes, and the winds which blow from the Central Massif help temper the heat in the vineyards, leading to very ripe fruits holding plenty of flavor.

Wine Spectator

Strappy plum and licorice-steeped cherry make a ripe impression in this vibrant, well-packed red. Vibrant and energetic on the palate, with details of baking spices and violet. Fluid and harmonious on the palate, with fine tannins keeping pace, but it's the steely mineral wall that really firms this up, making for a serious, solid finish. Best from 2026 through 2040. 1,075 cases made, 180 cases imported.

Wine Advocate

Emerging from one of the most challenging vintages in recent history, the 2022 Cornas Vieilles Vignes by Alain Voge presents a captivating bouquet, wafting from the glass with aromas of mulberries, tobacco, camphor and cigar wrap, enriched with carnal undertones. At this age, it is moderately weighted yet layered and tense, demonstrating a well-balanced and harmonious palate with good depth at its core, concluding long and spicy, with earthy nuances. As it opens up in the glass, notes of rose and cherries start to unfold. This wine is a testament to Alain Voge’s unique approach to Cornas, showcasing his extraordinary talent and solidifying his status as one of the gifted winemakers in the region.

Vinous Media

The 2022 Cornas Les Vieilles Vignes reveals high-pitched floral notes, black cherry, stemmy characteristics and licorice, offering both complexity and depth. Full-bodied and fleshy, the 2022 carries a touch of rusticity, culminating in a bold finish that reflects the warm vintage.

Decanter

Bay leaf and olive aromas, both black and green. It has body and juice on the palate, but retains a herbal vein that runs through into the finish. It's a grippy Cornas that's highly textural. May well score higher once in bottle.
