Grenache

The purple skinned grapes of the Grenache varietal have quickly become one of the most widely planted red wine grapes in the world, flourishing in several countries which have the correct conditions in which they can grow to ripeness. They thrive anywhere with a dry, hot climate, such as that found in central Spain and other such arid areas, and produce delightfully light bodied wines full of spicy flavors and notes of dark berries. Their robustness and relative vigor has led them being a favorite grape varietal for wineries all over the world, and whilst it isn't uncommon to see bottles made from this varietal alone, they are also regularly used as a blending grape due to their high sugar content and ability to produce wines containing a relatively high level of alcohol.

The single-vineyard 2020 Quiñón de Valmira was produced with the Garnacha field blend that contains 10% other traditional varieties from the Valmira Vineyard at 616 meters in altitude. It fermented with some full clusters with indigenous yeasts in oak vats and matured in oak foudres and bocoyes for 16 months. It's very spicy, peppery and aromatic, floral, a little à la Vosne-Romanée, with depth and complexity, very chalky, nicely textured, tasty, elegant and long. There is concentration and power, with 13.8% alcohol and a pH of 3.48 and 5.1 grams of acidity (tartaric), yet it's very balanced and elegant too. There are 3,973 bottles, 131 magnums and some large formats. It was bottled in April 2022.

From 35-year-old vines in a 3-hectare vineyard, planted at 616m on the Sierra de Yerga. Alvaro Palacios describes it as: 'austere' geology with 'cold soils' of chalky limestone. A blend of Garnacha with 10% other red varieties. Ripe scents of red plums, with violets, and a gentle cedar backdrop. Succulent, velvety fruits are layered with firm, ripe tannins on the palate. Vividly intense. 'Normally Valmira has few tannins. This vintage has surprised us. The tannins frame the wine a little more than previously. We added a few more full clusters – 55%,' says Palacios. No new oak.
