There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

Named after a hamlet on the Lafite estate, this new creation from Lafite-Rothschild comes from selected parcels of the vineyard. It is a rich wine, worthy of the vintage and the estate. Balancing elegance with ripe black currant fruits, the wine is restrained and has some aging potential. It should be ready from 2025. (Cellar Selection)

The first bottled vintage of Lafite’s new wine shows Pauillac swagger with salivating purity and a sense of openness and fun. A seriously drinkable style with blackcurrants and fragrant cherries, subtle herbal spice as well as liquorice and pencil-led mineral touches giving a nice crisp finish. This has energy, a clearly wide and expansive frame but retains refinement. A majority of Merlot at 48% with 39% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13% Petit Verdot. Ageing in ex-Lafite barrels of one vintage for 16 months.

A new wine from the Lafite Rothschild stable, the 2018 Anseillan offers up exuberant aromas of blackberries, cherries and burning embers, framed by a discreet patina of creamy oak. Medium to full-bodied, broad and fleshy, it has a vibrant, precise core of fruit framed by rich, youthfully chewy tannins that assert themselves on the finish. It's a blend of 48% Merlot, 39% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13% Petit Verdot.

Coming from a cooler terroir east of Château Lafite, the 2018 Château Lafite Anseillan is 48% Merlot, 39% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Petit Verdot that spent 16-18 months in barrel. It has a ruby/purple hue as well as a solid bouquet of red and black cherries, currants, spicy oak, and tobacco. Medium-bodied, supple, and elegant on the palate, it has plenty of Pauillac character, outstanding balance, and is perfect for drinking any time over the coming 10-12 years or more. It's impeccably made and already delicious.

Winery Notes

Beautiful color, very young. Rich, intense and expressive nose, very characteristic of the vintage with its ripe and fresh notes. On the palate, the wine continues along the same lines: its attack is dense while remaining lively, it is powerful while being light. Already melted, the tannins are present and stretch the palate with length.
