Champagne Blend

The sparkling wines of Champagne have been revered by wine drinkers for hundreds of years, and even today they maintain their reputation for excellence of flavor and character, and are consistently associated with quality, decadence, and a cause for celebration. Their unique characteristics are partly due to the careful blending of a small number of selected grape varietals, most commonly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. These grapes, blended in fairly equal quantities, give the wines of Champagne their wonderful flavors and aromas, with the Pinot Noir offering length and backbone, and the Chardonnay varietal giving its acidity and dry, biscuity nature. It isn't unusual to sometimes see Champagne labeled as 'blanc de blanc', meaning it is made using only Chardonnay varietal grapes, or 'blanc de noir', which is made solely with Pinot Noir.

Since those times, a vast amount of Italian land has remained primarily for vine cultivation, and thousands of wineries can be found throughout the entire length and breadth of this beautiful country, drenched in Mediterranean sunshine and benefiting from the excellent fertile soils found there. Italy remains very much a 'land of wines', and one could not imagine this country, its landscape and culture, without it.

The beautiful north westerly wine region of Lombardy in Italy is home to many of the country's most characterful and well respected wines, most of which are grown on the shores of the stunning Lake Garda. The lake itself plays a vitally important part of the region's viticulture, as the climate around the river is cooler than in surrounding areas, thus tempering the heat of the vineyards and allowing the vines which grow there to ripen more slowly. For centuries, Lombardy wines have been considered amongst the finest in Italy, and today, the wine industry of the region is doing very well indeed. With wineries in Lombardy utilizing a successful blend of traditional and modern techniques, they are continually producing wines which express the excellence of the terroir the vines are grown on, and which contain fascinating and unique flavors and aromas.

The 2015 Extra Brut Riserva Quintessence is smoky in the glass, slowly evolving with nuances of young peach, ground ginger and the slightest hint of vanilla bean. This washes across the palate, displaying a pretty inner sweetness that combines with vibrant acidity and notes of ripe melon to create a sense of balanced opulence. The 2015 lingers incredibly long and potent, yet harmonious, mixing nectarine with candied lime and confectionary spice. This is stunning, to say the least. The Riserva is a blend of 70% Chardonnay and 30% Pinot Noir.

Aromas of baked apples dusted with cinnamon, white flowers, pastry dough and lemon zest spill from the glass of this pretty sparkler. The rounded palate is rich, but the acidity cuts perfectly through to keep the palate refreshed. Green apple, ginger and stone minerality define the palate.

Intense yellow with highlights veering towards gold reflexes in color. Notes of fine tropical fruit with so, delicate and creamy mousse.
