By far and away the most recognized and widely grown red wine grape varietal in the world is the Cabernet Sauvignon. First cultivated in the 18th century in France, this wonderful cross of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc grapes has long since been the most important varietal for red wines across the globe. Now grown everywhere from its native France to the furthest reaches of the New World, Cabernet Sauvignon is adored and prized by wineries for its hardiness and resistance to rot, as well as its large and sharp flavors and wonderful capability for fine aging Indeed, many of the finest wines of history and the modern age would be simply unimaginable without Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, with the famed wineries of Bordeaux and other important regions using it as the primary grape in their oak aged produce. High tannin levels, acidity and powerful flavors are the characteristics most commonly associated with this varietal, however, when blended and slowly aged, it is capable of a world of flavors and aromas unmatched by any other grape.

California as a wine producing region has grown in size and importance considerably over the past couple of centuries, and today is the proud producer of more than ninety percent of the United States' wines. Indeed, if California was a country, it would be the fourth largest producer of wine in the world, with a vast range of vineyards covering almost half a million acres. The secret to California's success as a wine region has a lot to do with the high quality of its soils, and the fact that it has an extensive Pacific coastline which perfectly tempers the blazing sunshine it experiences all year round. The pinnacle of the range at Barnett is the 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Rattlesnake Estate Bottled. It's the most concentrated of the various bottlings, accenting black cherries, cassis and raspberry notes with hints of crushed stone and pencil shavings. Full-bodied and firm but approachable, it's a classic mountain Cabernet with two decades of potential longevity.

The Rattlesnake bottling is a blend of Barnett’s finest estate fruit from the vintage. Maceration times ranged from 13 to 23 days, tailored to each parcel’s extraction needs. Following fermentation, the wine was pressed into 89% new French oak barrels for ageing. Over its nearly two years in the cellar, it was racked three times to refine its character. Richly scented with kirsch, fig paste, and mocha, this full-bodied wine is framed by palate-etching tannins that settle into every crevice. Nuances of sage and pressed violets emerge, layering themselves atop the densely rich, sweet fruit core that drives the lengthy finish. This is a powerful and attractive wine, with hedonism at its core.

Winery Notes

The color of the wine is a beautiful dark purple at the core with a crimson rim. Immediate dark chocolate and coffee jump out of the glass, as well as blackcurrant puree and fresh blackberries. Underlying elements of eucalyptus, gravel and pepper spice complement the licorice and nutmeg spice. This is a very lush velvety wine on entry. The dark berry fruit is very pronounced, with other flavors of peppercorn and mocha. The sizeable tannins are in a chalky complex form that are matched by the acidity and demand cellaring. This beautiful and substantial wine will age amazingly over the next 15-17 years.
