Varietal

Nerello

Nerello, an indigenous grape variety thriving on the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily, Italy, is a captivating and unique wine varietal deserving exploration. The two primary expressions, Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio, contribute to the region's acclaimed Etna wines. Known for their versatility, Nerello grapes produce wines with vibrant acidity, moderate tannins, and an alluring spectrum of red fruit flavors, from cherries to raspberries. However, what sets Nerello apart is its ability to convey the distinctive volcanic terroir of Mount Etna. The vines' roots delve into mineral-rich volcanic soils, imparting a unique mineral character and a profound sense of place to the wines. Nerello wines, with their elegance and volcanic edge, provide a captivating journey into Sicily's winemaking heritage, showcasing the harmonious relationship between grape variety and terroir.

Country

Italy

There are few countries in the world with a viticultural history as long or as illustrious as that claimed by Italy. Grapes were first being grown and cultivated on Italian soil several thousand years ago by the Greeks and the Pheonicians, who named Italy 'Oenotria' – the land of wines – so impressed were they with the climate and the suitability of the soil for wine production. Of course, it was the rise of the Roman Empire which had the most lasting influence on wine production in Italy, and their influence can still be felt today, as much of the riches of the empire came about through their enthusiasm for producing wines and exporting it to neighbouring countries. Since those times, a vast amount of Italian land has remained primarily for vine cultivation, and thousands of wineries can be found throughout the entire length and breadth of this beautiful country, drenched in Mediterranean sunshine and benefiting from the excellent fertile soils found there. Italy remains very much a 'land of wines', and one could not imagine this country, its landscape and culture, without it.

Region

Sicily

The beautiful island of Sicily has been growing grapevines and producing wines for thousands of years, ever since the ancient Greeks first landed on its golden shores and noticed the island's true potential as a haven for quality grapes. Today, the island is one of Italy's primary wine regions, and even though over eighty percent of Sicily's grapevines are used for the production of sweet fortified wines, the remaining wineries making other wine styles are renowned around the world for their quality and character. Indeed, Sicilian wineries are famed for their ability to capture something of the sun-drenched region in their wines, and the vines they cultivate benefit enormously from the almost constant sunshine and the incredibly fertile volcanic soils which typify the island.

Appellation

Etna

Etna, a captivating wine appellation nestled on the slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily, Italy, is gaining global recognition for its unique and expressive wines. The region's volcanic soils, shaped by the active volcano, impart distinctive mineral nuances to the wines, making Etna wines truly exceptional. Primarily focused on the indigenous Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio grapes, these wines showcase vibrant acidity, red fruit flavors, and an intriguing volcanic terroir. The high-altitude vineyards, coupled with varying microclimates, contribute to the complexity and finesse of Etna wines. Embracing both tradition and innovation, Etna stands as a testament to the fascinating interplay between terroir and grape varieties, offering wine enthusiasts a unique and memorable tasting experience.

WA 93pts

Wine Advocate

From vines planted in 2006 and 2007, the Bella-Colonna 2024 Etna Rosso is a terrific wine. It possesses the three qualities of an important Etna red, says vintner Marco de Grazia: quality, identity and discretion. This wine never shows off its muscle, yet it has unmistakable stage presence, understated exuberance and an almost invisible structure. Mineral throughout, it closes with a soft creaminess and the unusual suggestion of white chocolate and pistachio.

VM 93pts

Vinous Media

The 2024 Etna Rosso opens with a vivid bouquet of black cherries, sweet lavender and autumnal spice. This is seamless and silken in feel, with mineral-laced wild berry fruits, tantalizing acidity and blue inner florals toward the close. Nuances of clove and incense linger over a tart blackberry inflection. This is stunning for an "entry-level" Etna Rosso.

Winery Notes

• 100% Nerello Mascalese planted from a Massal selection of Marco’s oldest vines. • Produced from young vines replanted in 2006 & 2007 in the Bella-Colonna vineyards in Calderara Sottana. • 600-650 meters above sea level. • Vines range between 5-50 years old. • Volcanic soils. • Harvested at the beginning of October, the grapes go through a soft pressing and low temperature fermentation. • Spontaneous malolactic fermentation and aging in large French oak barrels (50 hl). • Aging in barrel for 14-16 months with 1 month additional in stainless steel.
