This black skinned grape has been used for wine making for centuries, with several ancient civilizations noticing the fact that it is highly versatile and holds some delicious flavors and aromas, perfect for those looking for a powerful yet elegant grape for their wines. Tempranillo often causes winemakers some trouble, however, as it is highly susceptible to many diseases. The 2021 Tempranillo is from Rioja. Intense fruit, violet and soft herbal notes shape a delicate aromatic profile in which the oak remains finely judged. Graceful on the palate, with subtle herbal nuances and tannins that move between plush and chalky textures. It is long and persistent. Over the years, this wine has increasingly embraced the character of the Sonsierra, relaxing its structure in favor of elegance. With the 2021 vintage, that stylistic pursuit feels fully aligned: the year’s natural balance and precision of fruit seem to match the estate’s hard-won ideal of finesse. More than a successful vintage, this feels like a moment of coherence, where Macán finally settles into a path that speaks more clearly—and more convincingly—of the Sonsierra.

The 2021 Macán is from a year that had above-average rainfall and some hail in June that lowered yields but good weather during harvest. It has 1% Graciano. It comes in at 14.5% alcohol, with a pH of 3.8 and five grams of acidity. This year, they used 100% indigenous yeasts, and the élevage was in new barrels (50%) and 4,000-liter oak foudres and lasted 12 months, followed by another six months in 20,000-liter oak vats. This is serious, harmonious and subtle, more elegant than any vintage before, reflecting the freshness from the year. It's nicely built, very proportioned, with balance, freshness and abundant but fine-grained tannins. It's one of the finest if not the finest vintages to date. A total of 112,755 bottles, 3,354 magnums and some larger formats were produced. It was bottled in August 2023.

A graceful red that expands on the palate, revealing lush layers of pureed mulberry, cherry and raspberry fruit, with violet, anise, thyme and sweet paprika accents, plus an underpinning of iron and graphite. Sculpted tannins are fine-grained and limber, providing supple definition for this long, refreshing red. Drink now through 2041. 9,400 cases made, 350 cases imported.

Winery Notes

Macán is made only from grapes of the Tempranillo variety, from a meticulous selection of mature plots found on high terraces with poor gravelly soils of a loamy-calcareous nature. During fermentation, in the winery´s first year, the extraction was very precise and the evolution of the oak lead to a better blending in the ageing phase, which took place in barrels (50 % new) of French origin and a 4,000-litre Foudre for sixteen months.
