Although primarily associated with the Rhone region of France, the precise origins of the Viognier grape variety are unknown, and the subject of much debate. However, these fine and delicate green skinned grapes are an important varietal for many of France's most elegant white wines, and they are quickly beginning to spread around the New World, too, where wineries are discovering their unique qualities and unusual character. Viognier grapes are notoriously difficult to grow, due to the fact they are highly susceptible to mildew, but wineries persevere with them nonetheless, producing wines which are highly aromatic and have a great, fruit-forward character. The Rhone Valley of southern France is a particularly fascinating wine region, with a history that stretches back to at least six hundred BCE, when the ancient Greeks first began cultivating vines there. The 2022 Condrieu Les Caillets is beautifully charming and polished, evoking aromas of flowers, ripe white peach and almond blossoms mingled with delicate spicy notes. Medium to full-bodied, round and sappy, it's elegantly enrobing with a fleshy core of fruit and a perfectly balanced texture that segues into a long, elegantly bitter finish. Matured for six months in large barrels, it has a pH of 3.6.
