A perfumed nose with a touch of cream, spices and almonds to the white fruit of melon and nectarines. Waxy with good acidity, medium to full body and a bright, textured finish. Impressive length. A blend of 40% viura, 30% garnacha blanca and 30% maturana blanca. Drink or hold.

Ever since the Phoenicians and Romans brought their knowledge of vine cultivation to Spanish soils, the country's culture has grown alongside wine production, with wine being a vital part of Spanish identity and Spanish traditions. Each region of Spain has a wine quite distinct from the others, and it is produced by smallholders and families as much as it is by large companies and established wineries. La Rioja is by far the most famous wine region of Spain, and remains one of the world's great wine producing regions, consistently offering deep, complex red wines of character and distinction, partly due to the fact that La Rioja benefits from excellent soils, rich in minerals and nutrients, and plenty of sunshine. The climatic conditions allow the fine grape varietals to reach full ripeness and express plenty of the best features of their terroir, making La Rioja wines some of the most interesting to have ever come out of Europe. The Cantabrian mountains to the north provide the perfect shelter from the colder, wetter influences of the Atlantic oceans, and in the beloved vineyards of La Rioja, wineries have been cultivating exceedingly flavorful Tempranillo grapes for generations for the inclusion in their fine single variety and blended wines.

The white 2022 Flor de Muga Blanco Reserva was produced with a blend of 40% old-vine Viura, 30% Garnacha Blanca and 30% Maturana Blanca—they are one of the biggest producers of Maturana Blanca in Rioja and have 17 hectares, some still not in production. It fermented in small barrels at low temperature and then was kept in concrete eggs for three months (the Garnacha and the Maturana age superbly in the concrete), then it aged for six months in new barrels crafted by their coopers. It's very spicy and smoky, with a core of white fruit, flowers and herbs, a hint of fennel and aniseed. It's not a shy white; it's full bodied and comes in at 14% alcohol—it was a warm year—keeping a pH of 3.16 and 5.7 grams of acidity. It's powerful, balanced and gastronomical, a very serious white that should age very nicely in bottle. 27,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in September 2023. This wine was not produced in 2024.

Blended from 40% Viura, 30% Garnacha Blanca and 30% Maturana Blanca, the 2022 Blanco Reserva Flor de Muga shows a more refined oak profile than earlier releases. Nardos and fine wood mingle on the nose with pear, gentle compote, hints of fennel and tropical fruit. On the palate, it is rich yet fresh, with a delicate chalky texture, while oak provides structure and lift. The hot, dry year makes the wine slightly more developed, though tension remains.

The snap of plum skin–infused acidity is a bright, well-meshed frame for a range of yellow apple and pear, vanilla, toasted almond and broom notes. Creamy and balanced, with minerally petrol and salt through the finish. Viura, Garnacha Blanca and Maturana Blanca. Drink now through 2032. 1,920 cases made, 400 cases imported.

The medium-bodied 2022 Flor De Muga Blanco blends nearly equal parts Viura, Garnacha Blanca, and Maturana Blanca into a lovely, highly enjoyable wine of great complexity and tension. There’s light oak spice that provides a Chardonnay-like elegance, aged in concrete before going into new French oak barrels made from Muga’s own cooperage with a light toast. In bottle for another 18 months, it should continue to be in excellent shape another 10-15 years.

Winery Notes

A bright, golden coloured wine. On the nose it stands out for its very high intensity of aromas, very complex, in which first the spicy aromas (vanilla, cinnamon) come to the fore, with very faint toasted aromas and in the background, we find citrus fruit (grapefruit, lemon peel) complemented by white blossom. It shows good acidity on the palate, balanced by the smoothness and sense of volume in the mouth. The citrus and spicy notes return. Very long, with a mineral and somewhat phenolic finish as a result of the time spent in the wood.
