Cabernet Sauvignon

By far and away the most recognized and widely grown red wine grape varietal in the world is the Cabernet Sauvignon. First cultivated in the 18th century in France, this wonderful cross of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc grapes has long since been the most important varietal for red wines across the globe. Now grown everywhere from its native France to the furthest reaches of the New World, Cabernet Sauvignon is adored and prized by wineries for its hardiness and resistance to rot, as well as its large and sharp flavors and wonderful capability for fine aging Indeed, many of the finest wines of history and the modern age would be simply unimaginable without Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, with the famed wineries of Bordeaux and other important regions using it as the primary grape in their oak aged produce. High tannin levels, acidity and powerful flavors are the characteristics most commonly associated with this varietal, however, when blended and slowly aged, it is capable of a world of flavors and aromas unmatched by any other grape.

California as a wine producing region has grown in size and importance considerably over the past couple of centuries, and today is the proud producer of more than ninety percent of the United States' wines. Indeed, if California was a country, it would be the fourth largest producer of wine in the world, with a vast range of vineyards covering almost half a million acres. It is certainly approachable already, so there is no reason to defer your gratification. The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve has slightly more density and richness as one should expect, nice blackcurrant fruit, licorice, a pure classic flavor profile, medium to full body, ripe tannins and a long finish with well-integrated wood, acidity and tannin. It is a beauty that can be drunk now or cellared for up to 20 years.

Winery Notes

The reserve wines for Burgess are produced with grapes from the oldest vines on our Sorenson Vineyard, planted in 1979. Aromas and flavors of just ripened blue and red fruit are accentuated by the savory herbal aromatics of rosemary and thyme. There is a touch of mint as well as intense earthy graphite aromas.
