Of course, it was the rise of the Roman Empire which had the most lasting influence on wine production in Italy, and their influence can still be felt today, as much of the riches of the empire came about through their enthusiasm for producing wines and exporting it to neighbouring countries. Since those times, a vast amount of Italian land has remained primarily for vine cultivation, and thousands of wineries can be found throughout the entire length and breadth of this beautiful country, drenched in Mediterranean sunshine and benefiting from the excellent fertile soils found there. Italy remains very much a 'land of wines', and one could not imagine this country, its landscape and culture, without it.

The Campo di Sasso 2024 Insoglio del Cinghiale shows dark fruit flavors of blackberry and wild plum, delivering an easygoing and fruit-forward expression. First produced in 2003, it is a blend dominated by Syrah, with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc in lesser quantities, and it spends a brief six months aging, partly in oak and partly in stainless steel, to preserve freshness and drinkability. Light in mouthfeel but supported by sufficient fruit and acidity, the wine would work well alongside cheesy dishes such as pizza, baked pasta or young pecorino.

Winery Notes

A medium intense nose of dark fruits, blackberries, some floral notes and a hint of spicy oak in the background. A light to medium rich body with a fine structure and balance. Pairs well with game dishes, roast pheasant or rich game stews. Slightly chilled, it is equally good in summer with picnics and barbecues.
