The 2022 Sumoll from Masllorenç, on the border of Penedès and Tarragona, was aged 18 months in chestnut barrels. The nose features chestnut, pure cherry and an earthy underbrush character. The palate is vibrant and juicy with fine, reactive tannins reminiscent of Nebbiolo. Less extracted than the previous vintage, it achieves greater poise and balance. With a few more refinements, Pepe Raventós seems poised to reveal the true heart of this high-acid, characterful variety.

Ever since the Phoenicians and Romans brought their knowledge of vine cultivation to Spanish soils, the country's culture has grown alongside wine production, with wine being a vital part of Spanish identity and Spanish traditions. By combining traditional practices with modern technology, Spanish wineries are continuing to produce distinctive wines of great character, flavor and aroma, with the focus shifting in recent decades to quality over quantity.

The beautiful Spanish wine region of Catalunya has a history of viticulture which stretches back for over a thousand years, and has been influenced by a wide range of people who moved through the region, and brought their wine making skills and expertise with them. The region itself is a sizeable one, covering an area of sixty thousand hectares, and within this space there resides over two hundred individual wineries, ranging from small, independent and traditional ones to the larger, mass production bodegas known around the world. The terroir of Catalunya is varied, and ranges from being dry and arid, to more lush and green in the wetter parts of the region which are closer to the coast. This variation in terroir results in a fantastic range of grape varietals being grown, and a wide range of wine styles are produced within Catalunya.

I visited some of the plots of old-vine Sumoll that contribute to the 2022 Sumoll, a wine that shows the fact that they are still learning to handle the variety. For Pepe Raventós, this is a wine to drink in 10 years from now. I'm not sure, though, because there's no history; and few people are going to keep it that long. But maybe he's right, and in 10 years, the oak will be fully integrated... It does have a lot of tannin and is quite difficult right now. It's still a question mark for me. I tasted it next to the 2021 and 2023, and this was my least favorite of the three vintages.
