Varietal

Sangiovese

The name of this grape, meaning 'blood of Jove' conjures up evocative images of long dead civilizations, and gives the Sangiovese varietal a sense of the holy, the sacred, the special. Indeed, this particular type of Italian grape has been cultivated and processed for thousands of years, and is said to be the original favorite grape varietal of the Romans, and the Etruscans before them. Throughout history, vintners have continued to plant this varietal, and they continue to produce wonderful wines to this day. The long bunches of very dark, round fruit are treasured by fine wineries in Italy and a few other places around the world, and when young, these grapes are lively â€“ full of strawberry flavors and a little spiciness. However, it is when they are aged in oak that they take on some truly special flavors and aromas, as seen in some of the finest wines of the Old World.

Their 2015 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello Fonterutoli shows the sharpness and detail that wine is supposed to evoke in the best vintages. It opens to a dark garnet color and mid-weight texture. There is ample muscle and power here, but the overall emphasis is on grace and elegance. You really taste those authentic Sangiovese flavors of wild cherry, forest berry, blue flower and crushed rock.

Plenty of new wood overlaying the ripe fruit and spice on the nose. Full body, rich and flavorful with lots of vanilla and berry character. A little less new wood would be more pleasing to me but I like the wine's energy all the same. Better in 2019.

The 2013 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello Fonterutoli is a wine of power, volume and textural intensity, done in an especially racy, flamboyant style. There is terrific depth to the sweet red cherry and pomegranate fruit. At the same time, the oak is in my view a bit overdone. My impression is that the Gran Selezione could be a meaningfully better wine.
