Italian White Blend

Italian white blend wines exemplify the country's rich winemaking heritage, offering a diverse range of styles and flavors. What makes these blends unique is the meticulous interplay of indigenous grape varieties, each contributing distinctive characteristics to the final composition. Grapes like Trebbiano, Garganega, Vermentino, and Malvasia often feature in these blends, creating a harmonious fusion of floral, citrus, and tropical fruit notes. The versatility of Italian white blends is underscored by their regional diversity, from the crisp and mineral-driven whites of Friuli-Venezia Giulia to the fuller-bodied expressions of Sicily. These wines frequently exhibit a balance between acidity and texture, making them suitable for various occasions and culinary pairings. Italian white blends reflect a commitment to tradition while embracing innovation, offering a delightful exploration for wine enthusiasts. Whether enjoyed as a refreshing aperitif or paired with Mediterranean cuisine, these wines showcase Italy's vinous mosaic, inviting enthusiasts to savor the unique tapestry of flavors crafted from the country's indigenous white grape varieties.

Country

Australia

Whilst most of Australia consists of arid deserts and dense bushland, the oceanic coasts to the south of the country have a terrain and climate ideal for vine cultivation and wine production. It took several decades of failed attempts at the end of the 18th century in order to produce vines of a decent enough quality for making wine, but since those first false starts, the Australian wine industry has continued to grow and grow. Today, wine production makes up for a considerable part of the Australian economy, with exports in recent years reaching unprecedented levels and even overtaking France for the first time ever. Whilst the greatest successes in regards to quality have been the result of the Syrah grape varietal (known locally as Shiraz), Australia utilizes several Old World grapes, and has had fantastic results from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Riesling, Chardonnay and more. As the Australian passion for locally produced wine continues to develop, wineries have begun experimenting with a wider range of grape varietals, meaning that nowadays it isn't uncommon to find high quality Australian wines made from Petit Verdot, Sangiovese, Tempranillo and Viognier, amongst many others.

Region

Victoria

The Australian region of Victoria is the country's most historically significant wine region, with vine cultivation and wine production going on there since the mid 19th century. In those times, Victoria produced over half of all Australia's wines. However, today, despite having a huge number of wineries, Victoria has begun to focus on quality over quantity – many of the six hundred wineries based in this region produce wines made from lesser known grape varietals, often producing fascinating wines full of character, but made from vines with far lower yields and a considerably smaller audience. Today, most of the viticulture in Victoria takes place near the cool, coastal region around Melbourne. However, recent years have seen irrigation projects help wine makers grow vines in the more arid parts of the region, with a wide range of grapes now being grown.

James Suckling

2022 was a cooler vintage and the wine is all the better for it. Taut and lighter weight, flecked with pistachio, lemon peel, almond husk and glazed quince. The finish is a long slake of flavor and effusive energy. An excellent drinking wine brimming with signature versatility, borne of familial belief at the Chalmers hearth in Italian varieties and their suitability to warmer Australian conditions. Drink or hold.

Wine Advocate

The 2022 White Field Blend Montevecchio Bianco is a combination of Ribolla Gialla (50%), Vermentino (32%), Pecorino (9%), Moscato Giallo (3%), Malvasia Istriana (3%), Falanghina (3%). The fruit was handpicked, co-fermented and utilized natural yeasts. The wine is concentrated and slick with spiced pear, apples, a hint of lychee, crackers and brine. A lovely, crunchy, yet somewhat rich white wine.

Winery Notes

Montevecchio Bianco is a field blend made from hand harvested grapes. The fruit is whole bunch pressed and co-fermented with wild yeast in stainless steel tank for a bright, pure and vibrant wine with fresh fruity aromas, zest and pith, dry and a touch of morish texture. The make-up changes from vintage to vintage but it’ll likely see varieties such as Vermentino, Ribolla Gialla, Pecorino, Falanghina, and many more…
