Fresh and perfectly ripe on the nose, aromas of rhubarb, white strawberries and black plums harmonize elegantly with red rose petals and crushed white peppercorns. A definite verve pulsates through this wine. The palate is dry with black plums and white strawberries balanced by clove and cardamom. Mouth-watering acidity tames its youthful tannins, giving a nice linger of cherry, white tea and rose petals on the finish.

The region is highly respected as an excellent producer of Chardonnay wines, and the Chardonnay grapes which grow there, on the southern slopes of the Cote d'Or, are packed full of the unique and powerful characteristics of this very special terroir. Interestingly, Cote De Beaune produces more red wine than white wine, despite its white wines being so famous. This Beaune 1er Cru has a striking nose of mint, Amarena cherry and licorice, the smoky oak rather in the background. Impressive depth and tannin structure, the latter certainly demanding some time to fully resolve. At the moment the finish is too velvety (strange as that may sound), but this is a very young wine with excellent fruit and a nice savory component. Drinkable now, but best from 2025.

90-92 The perfumed and cool nose is composed by notes of essence of red raspberry, a plethora of floral elements and a touch of forest floor. There is slightly more volume and richness to the attractive textured if decidedly punchy flavors that conclude in an equally austere and balanced finale that is even more compact. This too is going to require at least some patience.

Decanter

Done in a long-lived ‘vin de garde’ style, this wine is meant to develop over time; the fruit is not notably lush or forward, but it is complex, with ripe plum and blackberry aromas accented with earth, menthol, and wood smoke. The texture is firmly tannic but not astringent, and the overall balance is muscular and powerful but still elegant. The grapes come from a total holding of two hectares, divided between three different plots. Each farmed and vinified separately. The grapes are fermented entirely as whole clusters before ageing in cask.
