Really perfumed with flowers and light strawberry jam as well as copper and iron. Medium-bodied, this has ultrafine bubbles, lovely fruit and hints of lemon rind. 40% pinot noir, 35% chardonnay and 25% pinot meunier. 5% of the pinot noir is sourced from Les Riceys. Dosage 8 g/L. Drink or hold.

The sparkling wines of Champagne have been revered by wine drinkers for hundreds of years, and even today they maintain their reputation for excellence of flavor and character, and are consistently associated with quality, decadence, and a cause for celebration. Their unique characteristics are partly due to the careful blending of a small number of selected grape varietals, most commonly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. These grapes, blended in fairly equal quantities, give the wines of Champagne their wonderful flavors and aromas, with the Pinot Noir offering length and backbone, and the Chardonnay varietal giving its acidity and dry, biscuity nature. It isn't unusual to sometimes see Champagne labeled as 'blanc de blanc', meaning it is made using only Chardonnay varietal grapes, or 'blanc de noir', which is made solely with Pinot Noir.

The beautiful rolling hillsides of the Champagne region of France have, for hundreds of years, been producing many of the world's most famous wines. The sparkling white wines to come out of Champagne's prestigious wineries have conquered the world, and are drank in celebration across the globe. The vast majority of the region is under vine, and grows predominantly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grape varietals, which are usually blended together by master wine-makers in order to make their recognizable and widely loved produce. The north-easterly region of Champagne has a relatively cool climate, and quite a lot of rainfall, making it far from ideal for ripening grapes. However, the presence of heavily forested areas in the region helps maintain a balanced temperature, and the generations of expertise the wineries hold clearly produces excellent results in spite of the climatic problems.

This is mouthwatering, with the tang of plum skin acidity animating rich notes of brioche and smoked hazelnut, plus a delicate weave of peach skin, crushed raspberry, pickled ginger and mineral elements. From a 2019 base and disgorged in 2024, the NV Champagne Reserve Brut Rosé has a medium copper to salmon hue and is inviting and open on the nose, with aromas of crushed roses, nectarines, and strawberry marmalade. Medium to full-bodied, it fills the palate and is a pleasure to taste, with a pillowing mousse, a pithy stone-fruit texture, and a light, savory note of hazelnut on the finish. Drink over the coming 10 years.

Very pale salmon in color, the Rosé Réserve NV has an attractive floral nose with teasingly ripe notes of red fruit, kumquat and pomegranate. The medium-bodied palate has a lithe acid line running throughout to accent red forest fruits with hints of spice and chalk through the long, lovely finish. A blend of 40% each of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay plus 20% Pinot Meunier; 5% of the Pinot Noir from Les Riceyes is always pre-blended with the best Pinot Meunier from the vintage, then added to the same assemblage as the Brut Reserve which includes 30% of reserve wines in the blend. This is a complex and well-crafted NV rosé with nine gram per liter dosage.

Based on the 2019 vintage and complemented by 25% reserve wines, with a 5% still red wine from Les Riceys in the Aube, Charles Heidsieck’s NV Rosé Réserve was disgorged in 2023 with a dosage of eight grams per liter. It opens from the glass with aromas of orange marmalade, melon, peach and candied pear with a hint of bergamot. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied and muscular, ample and textural, with a generous fruit core, succulent yet lively acidity, a pillowy mousse and an attractively perfumed finish. The blend comprises 40% Pinot Noir, 25% Pinot Meunier and 35% Chardonnay.

A complete rosé, where the wine—and it is very much a wine not just a Champagne—balances the tense tannins of the rosé with full, creamy texture and delicious fresh acidity. The apple flavors have a hue of red, merging with wild strawberries.
