Lots of black raspberry, mulberry, and black cherry fruits as well as cedar and floral notes emerge from the 2019 Château Bourgneuf, a medium to full-bodied, wonderfully pure, balanced Pomerol. I love its tannins, and it shows the pure, balanced style of 2019 in Pomerol perfectly. It will benefit from just 2-3 years of bottle age and drink brilliantly for 15-20 years. It’s another outstanding wine from this château.

The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

The 2019 Bourgneuf is another gorgeous wine from the Vayron family. Classy and polished from the very first taste, Bourgneuf has all the creaminess and texture it did en primeur, but with a bit more energy and tension backing it all up. In recent years, Bourgneuf seems to have a touch more volume, but it remains a wonderfully understated, classy Pomerol. Hints of red/purplish fruit, rose petal, new leather and cinnamon linger.

A blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, the 2019 Bourgneuf is deep garnet-purple colored. It rolls out of the glass with open-knit expressions of blackberry preserves, black tea, and plum preserves with hints of underbrush and Sichuan pepper. Medium to full-bodied, it has firm, fine-grained tannins and a lively backbone lifting the bright black fruit to a long, pure finish.
