There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

One of many fine estates in Moulis that include Poujeaux in their names, this wine is rich. However, it also has a stylish line of ripe tannins and black-currant fruits. The wine is set for further aging, so drink from 2025.

Beautifly florality on the nose, full of freshly picked roses with sweet red and black berry fruit. Smooth and charming on the palate, rich and full in flavour but with a supple texture of fine tannins and plump fruit. Keeps the freshness and the salinity while stick packing a punch in terms of overall expression. Salty, tangy, ripe, cool and fresh with persistence from start to finish. Lovely personality and character with ripe cassis and plum, toasted oak, dark chocolate bitterness but also cola, liquorice and wet stones. Great clarity and motion. You can sense the sunny vintage and the oak, but it works well here with enough juiciness to make this enjoyable and very drinkable.

A blend of 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Petit Verdot, the 2018 Branas Grand Poujeaux is deep garnet-purple in color. It comes bounding out with bold notes of baked blackberries, warm cassis, and Morello cherries, plus suggestions of violets, cardamom, dark chocolate, and star anise. Full-bodied, the palate is jam-packed with generous black fruits, framed by grainy tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and spicy.

The 2018 Branas Grand Poujeaux was consistent with my previous tasting note. This remains quite backward on the nose, blackberry and briary, becoming floral with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied and seems to have firmed up in recent months, though there is plenty of depth towards the tobacco-infused finish. This should give 12 to 15 years' drinking pleasure. Tasted at the Branas Grand Poujeaux vertical at the château.

Ample and fleshy, the 2018 Branas Grand Poujeaux is a medium to full-bodied, supple, fruit-driven wine evocative of violets, ripe cherries and berries, framed by a sweet patina of new oak. Generous and extrovert, it's one of the commune's flashier, more modern-styled wines, without losing its Bordelais identity.

A charming, complex, already delicious Moulis, the 2018 Château Branas Grand Poujeaux gives up a great nose of red and black fruits, flowery incense, lavender, and chocolate. This carries to a medium-bodied, elegant wine with sweet tannins, a rounded, silky texture, and outstanding length. It's going to drink nicely for at least 8-10 years.
