A great Brane-Cantenac with restraint, precision and concentration. Lots of layers and nuances. Still classic and deep, with aromas of graphite, cigar box and hints of tar and paprika. So complex and refined, with a full body and a long, structured finish. Tight, but the tannins are resolved. A stunning wine. 62% cabernet sauvignon, 30% merlot and 8% cabernet franc. Drinkable now, but even better in the future. From a vertical tasting at the winery.

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

The Margaux appellation of France's legendary Bordeaux wine region is one of the world's most famous and highly respected viticultural areas. For centuries, Margaux has been deeply associated with extremely fine wines of the highest quality, made using traditional and time-honored techniques in order to extract the very best, most refined and elegant flavors and aromas from the Bordeaux varietal grapes which grow there. Margaux wines are almost always blended, using two or three key Bordeaux grapes, commonly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc (amongst others). The blending techniques and quantities have been passed down through the generations in the ancestral chateaus which make up the region, and quality and prestige has never been allowed to falter, making Margaux one of the undisputed jewels in France's already glittering crown.

62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc. Still a very youthful and lively Margaux with fine tannins and fresh acidity. The wine needs a long time to reach its peak; it is a top classic. The nose is refined and layered, with notes of blueberry and prune, followed by integrated oak with evidence of charcoal wood and pencil shavings.

A blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 8% Cabernet Franc aged 18 months in 70% new French oak, the 2010 Château Brane-Cantenac sports a dense ruby/purple hue as well as a powerful, intense bouquet of smoky black fruits, scorched earth, graphite, and burning embers. It's medium to full-bodied, concentrated, and focused on the palate, with ripe yet certainly present tannins and a blockbuster of a finish. It's a classic 2010 in every sense. It offers pleasure today yet is only at the early stages of its prime drinking plateau, with another 30 years of longevity. Drink 2026-2056. The 2010 was harvested from September 27 to October 14, hitting 13.5% alcohol with a pH of 3.57.

Deep garnet colored, the 2010 Brane-Cantenac features bold scents of redcurrant jelly, kirsch and cassis plus nuances of forest floor, tree bark, fungi and dried herbs. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has bags of bright, energetic fruit with a grainy texture and tons of freshness, finishing long and perfumed.

It opens with maturing scents of tobacco, new leather, and prunes, giving way to creme de cassis, raisin cake, and cast-iron pan. Medium to full-bodied, it is built like a brick house with super-firm tannins and a racy backbone supporting the dense fruit, finishing long and minerally.

The palate is very well balanced, typically "classic " in style with quite rigid tannins indicating that this needs a few more years in bottle.
