There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

Château Calon Ségur is the northernmost classified growth. The wine often has a high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon, and 2017 is no exception. With 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, it was fermented in stainless steel, then aged for 18-20 months in 100% new oak. Georgie Hindle: Unctuous, juicy and ripe, with excellent precision and presentation. The fruit feels fresh and cool, and this salty, mineral tang is so delicious. I really feel the sea here! Vincenzo Arnese: Powerful nose with a lot of intensity; the wine shows some tertiary aromas of earthiness like mushroom and forest floor, followed by mocha and dark chocolate. Nice body and structure. Tannins and acidity are present but integrated. Andy Howard MW: Extra concentration and depth here with layers of plum and dark cherry fruit, spice notes, plenty of ripe tannins and fresh acidity to balance. A very classy, complex, delicious 2017.

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Calon-Ségur features warm plums, cassis, baked cherries and mulberries, earth, meats and cedar on the nose with notes of lavender and olives. The palate is medium-bodied, elegant and intense with firm, fine-grained tannins and great length, finishing minerally. This wine was aged in 100% new French oak barrels for 20 months. The blend is 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot.

Graphite, wild herbs, bracken, violets and such spicy black and blue berries. The palate has impressive concentration, yet very supple, charming texture. Such impressively articulated tannin detail with very fine, long tannins and deeply integrated oak. This wine is so full of flavor and interest from start to finish. A blend of 76% cabernet sauvignon, 13% merlot, 9% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot. Needs three to four year to come around. Try in 2023 and onwards.

As you’d expect, the grand vin ratchets up the intensity. The 2017 Chateau Calon Segur is 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, and 2% each of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot aged 20 months all in new barrels. This deep, inky hued 2017 boasts medium to full-bodied aromas and flavors of creme de cassis, leafy herbs, and mineral nuances. It stays tight and compact on the palate, has wonderful Saint-Estephe Cabernet character, ripe tannins, and is just a classic, balanced effort that will benefit from 4-6 years of bottle age and evolve for 25+ years.

The 2017 Calon Segur has a medium to deep garnet-purple color. It strolls out with evocative scents of cassis, redcurrants, and kirsch, plus nuances of camphor, crushed rocks, and wild thyme. Medium-bodied, the palate has plenty of savory-laced black and red fruits in the mouth, with chewy tannins and a lifted finish.

Ripe and focused, featuring a solid core of plum and black cherry fruit, supported by a well-embedded cast iron note.
