Long-term Pre-arrival Items
Long Term Pre-arrival Definition: Ordering wine directly through us from our supplier partners in Europe in advance of the item’s physical arrival in the US.
Long Term Pre-arrival sales ensure you’re getting the best possible price and that you have also secured the product before it hits the normal retail supply chain. The lead time for Pre-arrival goods is generally 4–8 months, sometimes longer based on supply chain and the logistics of transporting goods overseas. The expectation, from our team, is to communicate to the customer the location of their purchase every step of the way.
This product is offered as a full case purchase option, minimum order quantities may be applicable. When available, multiple case options will be presented. If you are purchasing a Pre-Arrival item you must order a solid case.
Rapid Ship
Items listed as "rapid ship" are in stock and available for immediate pickup or shipment. Those that do not have the "rapid ship" icon are housed with our supplier and must be transferred to our warehouse before they can be picked up or shipped. This requires 4-6 business days but usually occurs sooner. Some products will list both options of availability as there will be a certain number in stock, with the option to order additional bottles to be transferred from the supplier.

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. This is really beautiful now, with subtle blackberries, cherries and minerals that follow through to a silky texture, underlying the fine tannin structure. This wine continues to improve in quality with years of bottle age. Underlines the beautiful quality of this vintage on the right bank of the Gironde. Drink or hold.

This vintage is two years in to ownership by Chanel. John Kolasa was the estate's director. The vines are at a lower density in 1998 compared to 1989, at 5,600 vines/ha. The precision of today's viticulture was clearly underway here, with double sorting of the grapes. There was some rain in September, so they began harvest (which ran from 26 September to 9 October) late in the morning to avoid dew. Well constructed and carefully placed, this shows more Canon character of today than the 1989, but is still not at the heights reached in more recent vintages. There's a lilting freshness, with carefully drawn strands of silky tannin, gentle raspberry and cassis fruit, and notes of soft liquorice and crushed leaf on the finish. 70% new oak. Drinking Window 2019 - 2036.

Tasted at the Château Canon vertical, the 1998 Canon needed patience. The aromatics are very tightly knit and initially the 1998 seems a little anonymous. Then, after several minutes is begins to unfurl with a classic Saint Emilion nose: blackberry, leather, a touch of animal fur and a light marine influence. The palate is very well balanced, fresh in the mouth with a fine line of acidity. This is an elegant, understated Canon that is quite different from many of the more opulent Saint Emilions. This is more linear and perhaps old fashioned, a retro-styled Saint Emilion. But there is a great wine here if not quite at the level that I have found in the past. Tasted October 2015.
