There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Certan de May almost always makes wines of great finesse and accuracy. The 2016 is fine and fruity with loads of dark and warm, perfectly mature fruit with notes of truffles and milky chocolate. The taste is round and pleasing followed by a long and dense aftertaste. It is a well composed wine and a classic example of the Certan de May style.

Rated 94 - If you're looking for truffle and cherry notes, you came to right place. Add in soft, silky textures, polished tannins and a blast of ripe, sweet cherries with licorice and lift in the finish and you get the picture. The 2016 Certan de May is by far the best bottle that I have encountered and far superior to the one tasted after bottling. It has a more upfront, red fruit-driven bouquet, raspberry coulis and wild strawberry, inky in style, perhaps more primal than its peers at this stage. The palate is silky smooth on the entry, quite lush, yet there is backbone here. This feels sensual, very pure, with a finish that just glides, although I find just a bit more grip and density in its Pomerol peers. But this restores a bit of faith in this Pomerol, which is a good thing. Tasted blind at the Southwold 10-Year-On tasting.

The 2016 Château Certain de May is a structured, firm, backward effort, yielding some herbal, cassis, and smoky, earthy aromas, medium body, good, not great concentration, and present tannins that emerge on the mid-palate and finish. Tight and backward, it’s going to benefit from short-term cellaring and should keep for 15+ years.
