This is dark, winey and well-built for the vintage, with dark currant and black cherry reduction notes showing admirable depth. Offers ample grip but is sleek and refined, with licorice, violet, graphite and roasted apple wood seamlessly inlaid through the finish. Well-done. Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2027 through 2040.

Varietal

Red Bordeaux

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act – the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

Appellation

Pomerol

Pomerol, a distinguished appellation on Bordeaux's Right Bank, stands as a vinous jewel celebrated for its exceptional Merlot-dominant red wines. What makes Pomerol unique is its relatively small size, allowing for an intimate focus on individual vineyards and an emphasis on artisanal winemaking. Unlike many Bordeaux regions, Pomerol does not have a formal classification system, placing the spotlight on each estate's intrinsic quality and distinct terroir. Merlot thrives in Pomerol's clay-rich soils, crafting wines of opulence, velvety texture, and alluring plum and black cherry notes. Iconic châteaux like Pétrus and Le Pin showcase the pinnacle of Pomerol's winemaking prowess. The absence of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blends further accentuates the appellation's uniqueness. Pomerol wines are revered for their approachability in youth and the ability to evolve gracefully over time, exemplifying the timeless elegance and allure of this exceptional Bordeaux appellation.

Classic Pomerol character, with tapenade, black truffle and dark berry aromas that follow through to a medium to full body with creamy tannins and a savory, spicy, almost salty aftertaste. 65% merlot, 25% cabernet franc and 10% cabernet sauvignon. Needs three or four years to soften. Best after 2028.

The 2023 Certan de May is all substance and power. Dark-toned fruit, cloves, new leather, licorice, incense and scorched earth reinforce that initial impression. There's real breadth and power in the glass. The blend of 65% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon yields a decidedly potent, explosive Pomerol.

A perfumed, aromatic, and floral Pomerol, the 2023 Château Certan De May is based on 65% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and was aged 16-20 months in 80% new French oak. Juicy red fruits, leafy underbrush, and spring flowers all emerge from the bouquet, and it's medium-bodied on the palate, with a pure, layered, elegant mouthfeel, fine tannins, and nicely integrated acidity. It's one of the more open, expressive, and complex Pomerol in the vintage, and I'd happily drink a bottle any time over the coming two decades. Drink 2026-2045.

89-91 Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2023 Certan de May comes bounding out with exuberant notes of crushed blackberries, juicy black cherries, and menthol leading to wafts of lavender and rosemary. The medium-bodied palate is refreshing and plush, with juicy black berry flavors and a floral lift on the finish. The blend is 65% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon.

A blend of 65% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2023 Certan de May opens with aromas of licorice, chocolate and toast, shaped by a marked new-oak imprint. Medium- to full-bodied, dense and structured, it is built around a fleshy core of fruit, framed by powdery tannins and concluding with a firm, assertive finish.
