Offering up aromas of cassis, plums, pencil lead and licorice, the 2019 Chasse-Spleen is medium to full-bodied, with a fleshy core of fruit, lively acids and ripe, powdery tannins that assert themselves on the finish with a very civilized expression of Moulis-typical grip. Forget it for a decade and follow it for the next two.

Varietal

Red Bordeaux

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act – the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

James Suckling

Aromas of cassis, black cherries, licorice, dried tobacco and wet earth. Some leafy character, too. Medium-bodied with chewy tannins and vibrant, juicy fruit character. Firm and compact with hints of crushed stones in the finish. A little timid at the end. 52% cabernet sauvignon, 40% merlot, 6% petit verdot and 2% cabernet franc. Drink after 2024.

Decanter

A dark heady nose comprising blackcurrants, black cherries and some sweet cinnamon spices. This is a headier style, clearly powerful with well-handled, ripe fruit and a core of liquorice that gives it a more serious tone. It has good acidity and freshness with fine tannins that support the fruit and give weight and definition to the palate. Good intensity here. One to hold on to for a few years. Drinking Window 2024 - 2034.

The Wine Independent

The 2019 Chasse-Spleen is medium to deep garnet-purple in color. It leaps with compelling scents of black raspberry, crushed blackcurrants, and lavender, followed by suggestions of cedar and cloves. The medium-bodied palate delivers vibrant black and red fruits with a firm, grainy texture and plenty of freshness, finishing spicy.

Vinous Media

The 2019 Chasse-Spleen is lifted and aromatic in feel. Crushed leaves, mint, dried herbs and sweet red cherry fruit all grace this attractive light- to medium-bodied Moulis. A wine of understatement, Chasse-Spleen will drink well right out of the gate.
