Extremely perfumed and pretty with dark berries, such as blackberries and blackcurrants with fresh flowers. Full body, firm and silky tannins and a long, flavorful finish. Fantastic structure and composure to this young and vibrant 2016. Try from 2023.

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

This has a very full and inviting feel, with fleshy notes of açai berry, blueberry and fig fruit giving the core a dark profile, while anise and tobacco details hang in the background. The fruit is showy, but there's chalky minerality buried deep within, and this is likely to develop nicely. Should be a sleeper of the vintage. Best from 2022 through 2036. 400 cases made.

The 2016 Clos St. Martin is made up of 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, it leaps from the glass with bold blackberries, warm plums and red cherries notes plus hints of baking spices, cedar chest, chocolate mint, forest floor and smoked meats. Medium to full-bodied and jam-packed with generous black and red fruits, it has a solid frame of grainy tannins and wonderful freshness, finishing long and spicy. 93+

Here there's some clear opulence on display: a silky texture to the fruit, with hints of smoky grilled almonds and a salty lick on the finish. The oak is evident but gives a lovely spiraling sense of enjoyment to this generous, well balanced wine, and it will please both old and new fans of St-Emilion. Classicists as well as hedonists can find something to enjoy. 30% aged in clay amphora.
