A real St. Emilion with such finesse and intensity. Aromas of blueberries, blackberries, graphite, subtle crushed limestone and dried and fresh flowers. Perfumed. Medium- to full-bodied with tight and polished tannins and a long, long finish. Such class. 87% merlot, 7% cabernet franc and 6% cabernet sauvignon. A gorgeous red. Give it time. Drink or hold.

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

The 2023 Clos Fourtet is every bit as impressive as it was en primeur. Layers of dark-toned fruit, leather, incense, mocha and gravel all build over time, leading to an impressively potent, dramatic finish. Readers will find a rich, heady Clos Fourtet. I would cellar it for at least a few years to allow the tannins to soften and the baby fat to melt away. Today, the 2023 is very young and quite primary. Readers should be in no rush. Tasted twice.

Based on 87% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Cabernet Franc, the 2023 Château Clos Fourtet is one of the riper, sexier wines in the vintage. Ample cherry and currant-style fruit intermixed with smoky tobacco, damp earth, truffles, and spice all emerge from this very complex, balanced, layered Clos Fourtet. It has ample mid-palate depth, ripe, polished tannins, and outstanding length on the palate. It's a beautiful Saint-Emilion to drink over the coming 30 years or more. Drink 2026-2055.

92-94 2023 Clos Fourtet has a sweet, pure and fine nose providing lots of freshness. The taste is sweet and round with a massive fruity backbone. For a Saint Emilion this is a powerful wine. The tannins are notable in the aftertaste and it is a wine that will require considerable bottle age before you can enjoy it. Try in 6-9 years.
