Bright blueberry and chalk aromas with a hint of white pepper follow through to a full body that’s tight and compact, with cool fruit and a long, crunchy, tannic finish. There’s limestone character in both flavor and structure. A blend of 64% merlot, 28% cabernet sauvignon and 8% carmenere. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

90-92 2023 Chateau Fonbel has a sweet, round and pleasant nose with vibrant crunchy fruit. The taste is smooth, silky, balanced and fine with a nice peppery, tannic, though soft backbone. Very nice and very fresh with a long fruity aftertaste. A good 2023 that should be ready early on.

89-91 A slightly reduced, elegant bouquet of iris, gentian, licorice and spices intermixed with exuberant notes of violet preface the 2023 Fonbel, a medium to full-bodied, elegant and tense wine with a juicy core of fruit and a long, ethereal finish characterized by vertical energy. This is a blend of 64% Merlot, 28% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Carmenère. It’s a great bottle in the making.

The 2023 de Fonbel is a very pretty, delicate Saint-Émilion. Rose petal, mint, blood orange, dried herbs, cedar and pipe tobacco give the 2023 a good bit of complexity to play off its mid-weight structure. All this needs is a bit more persistence on the finish. Then again, most of this is young-vine Merlot planted on lower slopes with sandy/gravelly soils.
