Rhone Valley

The Rhone Valley of southern France is a particularly fascinating wine region, with a history that stretches back to at least six hundred BCE, when the ancient Greeks first began cultivating vines there. The region itself is split into two distinct sub-regions, with the northern sub-region being famed for its production of exceptional Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines, packed full of interesting character and expressing the terroir found there. The southern sub-region is home to an enormous variety of grapes, and produces red, white and rosé wines, and some of the world's most famous and adored blended wines. The continental climate of the region is ideal for growing grapes, and the winds which blow from the Central Massif help temper the heat in the vineyards, leading to very ripe fruits holding plenty of flavor.

This is tasting well now. It's harmonious, with the oak and fruit having come together nicely – poached pear, star fruit and grapefruit inlaid with sweet spices. It has a certain acidity and cut that makes for a powerful wine, but one with edge and precision. Saline finish. Matured 15% in new oak barriques, the rest in larger used barrels.

Oakier and gently more opulent than the Saintes Pierres, the 2021 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc reveals aromas of almonds, white flowers and pear. Medium- to full-bodied, layered and long, it is well balanced, with bright acids framed by a seamless texture, concluding with a long, spicy finish. This is a strong effort.

Pale youthful gold, clear and brilliant color. On the nose intense notes of white flowers and citrus with a lovely vanilla note. The palate has breadth, elegance and length. A noble wine, elegant and very expressive.
