#77 Top 100. An absolute legendary wine that’s as good as anything out there, the 2016 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou is reminiscent of the 2010, yet perhaps with a touch more opulence. A total blockbuster of a wine, it offers huge minerality as well as pure crème de cassis, liquid violets, graphite, and hints of tobacco that all emerge on the nose, and this fabulous Ducru-Beaucaillou is full-bodied, massively concentrated, and structured, yet somehow never loses its overarching sense of purity, balance, and elegance. This ultra-classic beauty deserves another decade of bottle age and will evolve gracefully for another 3-4 decades. Hats off to proprietor Bruno Borie for another incredible achievement.

Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. Very deep purple-black in color, the 2016 Ducru-Beaucaillou delivers a pronounced, enticing nose of baked plums, blueberry preserves, fruitcake and boysenberry with suggestions of lilacs, mocha, hoisin and exotic spices plus a waft of cedar chest. Full-bodied, rich and opulent in the mouth, the palate has layer upon layer of black fruit preserves and spicy nuances, matched by a very firm, grainy frame, finishing with epic length and depth.

2016 Ducru-Beaucaillou… what an enormous glass of wine! Pure First Growth quality. Loads of pure, silky, sweet and very focused fruit, tobacco, cassis, pepper and fresh minty nuances are all mixed together in an excellent way. A long aftertaste leaving your mouth coated with pleasure just underlines that Ducru-Beaucaillou is in the form of its life and probably in modern times have not produced anything quite on this level. A majestic glass that should be even better in 5-8 years time.

Bruno Borie and technical director Emmanuel Bonneau crafted this exquisite wine together in 2016. The nose is ripe but still stern, with oaky blackcurrant and blackberry. Very concentrated, but also velvety and succulent, it shows admirable tension, muscle and depth. Very youthful and chewy, but not extracted – and it retains that quintessential St-Julien finesse. The 2016 Ducru-Beaucaillou has quite a primal bouquet compared to its peers, quite luscious blackberry and blueberry scents, but it is far from exotic. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins, fine acidity, harmonious and poised, with a bright, very elegant finish. Wonderful. Expect that score to trickle upwards as it matures in bottle.
